Early Picks For The 2014-15 College Bowls

As long as college football bowl games have existed, it’s never been too early to take a look at early college bowl ATS picks. In the Cotton Bowl, Michigan State battles Baylor while the Rose Bowl, which is one of this year’s semifinal games in the College Football Playoff, pits Oregon against Florida State.

The other semifinal, the Sugar Bowl, is a battle between Ohio State and Alabama. Can Ohio State beat Alabama with their third string quarterback under center?

Analyzing My Early Picks For The 2014-15 College Bowls

Cotton Bowl
No. 5 Baylor Bears vs No. 8 Michigan State
Date: Jan. 01, 2015
Start Time: 12:30 p.m. ET
Location: Arlington, Texas
Stadium: AT&T Stadium
TV Info: ESPN
Stream Info: WatchESPN.com
Radio:  Baylor Vs  Michigan State
Point Spread: Bears -2.5
Game Total: 70

Analysis: Baylor was absolutely awesome when beating Kansas State 38 to 27. Baylor’s biggest issue is that it didn’t get a chance, like Ohio State did, to prove itself in a championship game. There has to be at least 11 teams in a conference for that conference to have a championship game. The Big 12 only has 10 teams while the Big Ten has 14 teams.

Baylor’s loss to West Virginia wasn’t nearly as bad as Ohio State’s loss to Virginia Tech, but the Bears ended up sharing the conference title with TCU. The truth is that the Cotton Bowl is going to prove, in a way, which conference is better.

Michigan State was on its way to a spot in the College Football Playoff but a loss to Ohio State ended their dreams. The Spartans have something that Baylor hasn’t had many times this season, a good enough defense to contain good offenses.

Baylor’s D hasn’t been very good in the past 3 games. The Bears allowed Oklahoma State to score 28, Texas Tech to score 46 and Kansas State to score 27. The Spartans average 496.5 yards and 43 points per game. They allow less than 294 yards on average per matchup.

Michigan State is the play based on the early odds.

Cottong Bowl ATS Betting Pick: Michigan State +3

Rose Bowl
No. 3 Florida State vs No. 2 Oregon Ducks
Date: Jan. 01, 2015
Start Time: 5 p.m. ET
Location: Pasadena California
Stadium: Rose Bowl
TV Info: ESPN
Stream Info: WatchESPN.com
Radio: Florida State vs Oregon
Point Spread: Ducks -7.5
Game Total: 71

Analysis: The Ducks make a strong case for being #1 in the College Football Playoff. No matter, there’s little chance for Florida State to win this game outright. The Seminoles just don’t have what it takes to beat a team like Oregon.

The Ducks are on one of the best rolls football handicappers are likely to ever see in a college football season. Since losing straight up to Arizona in a 24 to 31 game, Oregon has won 8 straight and they’ve covered the spread in 8 straight. The betting line started at -7. Within a single day, it has gone all the way up to Ducks -9.5.

Jump on the early odds in this one and get on the Oregon train.

Rose Bowl ATS Pick: Oregon -9.5

Sugar Bowl
No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes vs No.1 Alabama Crimson
Date: Jan. 01, 2015
Start Time: 8:30 p.m. ET
Location: New Orleans, Louisiana
Stadium: Mercedes-Benz Superdome
TV Info: ESPN
Stream Info: WatchESPN.com
Radio:  Ohio State vs Alabama
Point Spread: Crimson Tide -10.5
Game Total: 28

Analysis: Here’s the game that could turn Cardale Jones, Ohio State’s third string quarterback into a Buckeye legend. If Jones repeats what he did to Wisconsin, 257 yards and 3 touchdown passes, Ohio State will beat Alabama straight up.

The chances of that happening aren’t very good, though. Ohio State also rushed for 301 yards against the Badgers. The Crimson Tide allows only 88.4 yards per game on the ground. Without a rushing attack, Jones could be in for a long afternoon because Alabama’s defensive backs are starting to play very well.

It looks like the odds makers have this game right as well. Make sure to get the early odds before this line creeps up to Alabama -14.

Sugar Bowl ATS Betting Pick: Alabama -10
