Expert Picks College Football Week 3
Illinois at #21 South Florida
When: Friday, Sep. 15 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, FL
Analysis: Although South Florida is ranked, it’s tough to know how talented the Bulls are. Sure, USF is 2 and 0 straight up. But, South Florida is 0 and 2 against the spread. What’s worse is that South Florida couldn’t cover against 2 teams that they should have blown off the football field.
The Bulls only beat San Jose State 42 to 22. In Week 2, the Bulls took down Stony Brook 31 to 17. Neither wins were all that inspiring.
Does that mean the door is open for Illinois to come in and shock the South Florida Bulls? I believe so. Illinois has beaten 2 decent teams this season. They beat Ball State 24 to 21. They beat Western Kentucky 20 to 7.
Holding Western Kentucky’s offense to only 7 points is a big deal. Illinois has a chance to win this game straight up. Taking the points is a no-brainer.
Pick: Illinois +14.5
Air Force at #8 Michigan
When: Saturday, Sep. 16 at 12:00 pm ET
Where: Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, MI
Analysis: Air Force beat VMI 62 to 0 in their only game this season. The Air Force racked up 457 rushing yards against VMI. All told, Air Force gained 647 yards versus the Virginia Military Institute.
There’s a huge difference rushing the football against VMI and rushing it against Michigan. The Wolverines held Florida to 11 yards from 27 carries in their Week 1 win over Florida. The Wolverines kept Cincinnati to an average of 2.3 yards per rush.
This is a tough match up for Air Force. The Falcons aren’t a terrible football team. But, they rely too much on the rush to keep it close. Michigan should blow the Air Force out by at least 30 points.
Pick: Michigan -28.5
#25 Tennessee at #22 Florida
When: Saturday, Sep. 16 at 3:30 pm ET
Where: Ben Hill Griffin Stadium
Odds: Florida -4
Analysis: Tennessee probably should have lost their first game of the season. Georgia Tech had the Vols on the ropes before Tennessee rallied to beat Georgia Tech 42 to 41 in overtime. Tennessee sure looked like a team that didn’t have it quite together versus the Yellow Jackets.
Michigan spanked Florida in the Gators first game of the season. The Wolverines dominated Florida 33 to 17. The Gators have an excuse. Coach Jim McElwain suspended 10 players.
Even if McElwain suspends those same 10 players this Saturday, I like Florida to cover the spread. The Gators have the better offense while Tennessee should have a ton of trouble breaking down Florida’s defense.
I like Florida to cover on Sep. 16.
Pick: Florida -4
