College Football Week 2 Free Picks
Can Louisville continue to show dominance, this time versus a fellow ACC rival, on Friday, Sept. 9? On Saturday, TCU and Arkansas will try to bounce back from subpar performance in a marquee game. Will it be the Horned Frogs or the Razorbacks who prove that their Week 1 performance was an anomaly? Can Oregon take down Virginia, a squad thoroughly embarrassed by Richmond in Week 1?
#25 Louisville at Syracuse
When: Friday, Sept. 9 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Carrier-Dome, Syracuse, NY
Odds: Louisville -14.5
Analysis: Syracuse’s 33 to 7 win over Colgate was nice. I’m not sure it was exactly what Orange fans wanted to see. Syracuse did cover the -23.5-point spread.
It definitely wasn’t impressive enough of a win to expect Syracuse to have any shot at Louisville in Week 2. The Cardinals beat Charlotte 70 to 14. Louisville’s defense is as good as it was last season and the unit was plenty good last season. Louisville’s offense is what surprised me. QB Lamar Jackson was unbelievable.
He completed 74% of his passes. He threw for 286 yards. He threw 6 touchdown passes. He rushed for 119 yards. He scored 2 touchdowns with his feet. Jackson is at the top of the Heisman Trophy list after that performance.
Pick: Louisville -14.5
Arkansas at #13 TCU
When: Saturday, Sept. 10 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: Amon G. Carter Stadium, Ft. Worth, TX
TV: ESPN, ESPN2
Odds: TCU -7.5
Analysis: Wow. Arkansas’ 21 to 20 win over Louisiana Tech was way too much of a nail biter for coach Brett Beilema and the Razorback fans. The Razorbacks have to do a much better job to have any shot of staying close to TCU this week.
Texas Christian had some problems on defense against South Dakota State. They allowed South Dakota State to score 41 points in a 59 to 41 game. Will TCU step it up against Arkansas on the defensive side? I think so. First, the Horned Frogs definitely looked past South Dakota State in Week 1. That’s why TCU scored 35 of their 59 points in the second half. Second, Arkansas is a run first team. TCU gave up a 3.8 per yard rush average to South Dakota State in their 59 to 41 game win.
The Horned Frogs are the team to back at -7.5 points.
Pick: TCU -7.5
Virginia at #24 Oregon
When: Saturday, Sept. 10 at 7:30pm ET
Where: Autzen Stadium, Eugene, Oregon
Odds: Oregon -24.5
Analysis: Richmond beat Virginia 37 to 20 in Week 1. That’s the Richmond Spiders. Richmond is a Division-II football team. Say, what? Yes, let me repeat that…Richmond beat Virginia 37 to 20 in Week 1. The best part is that Virginia lost to Richmond at home.
Oregon beat UC-Davis 53 to 28 in Week 1. Yes, UC-Davis is also a Division-II team. But, Oregon didn’t lose straight-up to a Division-II team. Oregon covers a spread of up to -35 in this matchup.
Pick: Oregon -24.5
