The Line: Colorado State -5.5
Marshall has lost two straight coming into this contest including a heartbreaking 28-27 loss to Southern Mississippi in their last game back on November 25 while failing to cover the spread as a 2-point favorite. Thundering Herd finished third in the Conference USA East division with a 4-4 record and struggled down the stretch by going 1-4 over their last five games after getting off to a positive, 6-1 start. Marshall averaged 26.3 points per game this season (81st) while limiting the opposition to just 19.2 points per contest defensively (17th). Quarterback Chase Litton completed 60.6 percent of his passes this season for 2,853 yards with 23 TD passes, but also tossed 12 costly interceptions. Running back Tyler King rushed for a team-high 714 yards. Unfortunately, the Thundering Herd turned the ball over more than they forced turnovers, finishing the season at -6.
Colorado State picked up a huge 42-14 win to get past San Jose State in their regular season finale back on Nov. 18. The win snapped a three-game losing streak and gave them some momentum coming into this contest. Now, heading into their fifth straight bowl game after going 7-5 in the Mountain West Conference this season, the Rams will look to their explosive offense to get the win. Colorado State averaged a healthy 33.8 points per game (29th) while giving up 27.5 points per contest defensively (73rd). Quarterback Nick Stevens completed 63.6 percent of his passes this season for 3,484 yards with 27 TD passes and 10 interceptions while running back Dalyn Dawkins rushed for a stellar 1,349 yards and nine scores.
For this contest, I like Colorado State to win and cover the chalk because of their far more explosive offense and the fact that Marshall gave up 28 points or more in there of their last four losses. While the Thundering Herd has gone an impressive 5-0 ATS in their last 5 bowl games and 19-6-1 ATS in their last 26 non-conference games, they’re also just 2-3 ATS over their last five games. Despite going 2-5 ATS in their last 7 bowl games, Colorado State is a robust 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games against a team with a winning record. I like the Rams to cover, but just barely!
Pick: Colorado State -5.5
