Bet The California Golden Bears (-20) Because…
The Golden Bears found a suitable replacement for Goff in David Webb. Webb comes to California from Texas Tech. He’s a graduate transfer meaning that he can play right away. He’ll work behind 4 returning offensive linemen. If the Bears can find 1 or 2 breakout wide receivers, the offense should be formidable.
Bet The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (+20) Because…
Kevin Lempa returns as defensive coordinator. Lempa was the man responsible for Hawaii’s aggressive, ball-hawking defense during the June Jones’ era. With Lempa back on the sidelines, the Warriors’ D, which also returns 5 starters and has good depth in most positions, could improve enough to be one of the biggest surprise defensive units this season.
My College Football Week 1 Expert Pick & Final Score Prediction
Hawaii versus California should be a tight game. The Warriors return 4 of 5 offensive linemen. They also return their first 1,000 yard rusher in years in Paul Harris. New coach Nick Rolovich, a former Hawaii star at QB, is going to slow things down in this game.
Even though California shouldn’t be as productive on offense as they were last season with Webb at QB, the Golden Bears still have a fantastic offensive system. Expect Rolovich to try and control the clock with Harris pounding the pigskin into the middle of the Bears’ D.
That should be enough for Hawaii to be within shouting distance in the 4th quarter. I like California to win. But expecting the Bears to cover a 20 point spread in Sydney, Australia against an improved Hawaii team without Goff is expecting too much.
