A huge battle takes place in the Mountain West Conference on Friday night when Boise State travels to Utah State. Both teams are 2 and 0 in the conference.
For Boise State the game takes on added meaning as the Broncos feel they are good enough to garner consideration for a New Year’s Day Bowl Game. A 13 to 16 loss to BYU in Week 2 all but derailed the Broncos’ hopes at getting love from the Selection Committee for the College Football Playoff. But, running the table in impressive fashion from now until the end of the season might put the Broncos back onto the Selection Committees’ radar for a top bowl game.

Why Bet On #21 Boise State (-9.5) to Beat Utah State
Senior safety Thompson has 18 career interceptions for the Broncos.
It appears that the Boise State Broncos took the loss to BYU to heart. The Broncos know that getting into the College Football Playoff was a longshot since the only teams that they faced outside of the conference with any Top 25 hopes were BYU and Washington.

Boise State has been on a tear since the loss to the Cougars. The Broncos’ defense has been absolutely brilliant. It held Idaho State to 0 points in a 52 to 0 win. It held Virginia to 14 points in a 56 to 14 victory. Against Hawaii, the defense blanked a decent offense again in a 55 to 0 Boise State win. Colorado State could only put 10 points in a 41 to 10 Broncos’ victory.
The defense has definitely come together. It’s giving up less than 260 yards on average and 12 points on average per game. Utah State could be in some trouble in this matchup.
Why Bet On Utah State to Beat #21 Boise State
USU is 15-3 (.833) all-time in the Mountain West and has won 26 of its last 29 league games.
Utah State has an outside shot to upset Boise State but the Aggies are going to have to be very smart on offense. Utah State’s defense isn’t bad. Unfortunately, it’s going up against an offense that’s clicking on all cylinders.
The best chance that the Aggies have of beating Boise State is to rush the football and control the clock. You can’t expect to beat the Boise State defense on big plays. The defense is just too disciplined for you to do that. What you have to do is shorten the game and tire out what has become one of the top defenses in the nation.

Utah State can do that with a rushing attack that averages 167.8 yards per game. Utah State needs to utilize a running back by committee approach if they hope to have any shot at stopping the Broncos’ defense from forcing three and outs on a continuous basis.
That’s not likely to happen in this matchup. Utah State has looked very good in its last 2 games versus Colorado State and Fresno State. Boise State is on a different planet than those 2 teams. Utah State could put up a fight but Boise State will pull away in the second half, much like what Utah did when they played the Aggies. My final score prediction is Boise State 31, Utah State 13.
