Welcome to college football week 3 betting action when the top football program from the Mid-American conference tries to knock off another Big Ten team. Not just any Big Ten team, the number one team in the nation.
Even with all of that success the Las Vegas college football oddsmakers don’t care. The Northern Illinois Huskies are 34-point underdogs when they invade Columbus to face the top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes are just that damn good in the eyes of the Vegas oddsmakers! But alas, while OSU is a virtual lock usually every week to win straight up, the Buckeyes are 1-1 against the spread this year. They beat Virginia Tech by a 42-24 score in their season opener, covering the 14-point spread. Then last week Ohio State was a 41-point favorite over Hawaii but failed to cover, winning 38-o.
In their last 5 games, the Ohio State Buckeyes are 4-1 against the spread. They also covered all 3 of their last games which were all in postseason play including the National Title game.

Why Bet On Northern Illinois to Beat No. 1 Ohio State (-34.5)
Northern Illinois’ offense can keep up with OSU if they didnt have to face the Buckeyes’ D.
The Northern Illinois Huskies can pretty much score at will. The offense has been one of the best in college football so far this season. The offense is averaging 594 yards per game. That ranks the offense eighth in total yards per game. Northern Illinois passes for 374.5 yards per game. That ranks the Huskies ninth in passing yards per game on average. The Huskies rush for 294.5 yards per game. Northern Illinois averages 47.5 points per game.
The Huskies outscored UNLV 38 to 30 in Week 1 before pummeling Murray State 57 to 26 in Week 2. Versus UNLV, the Huskies racked up 545 total yards. They passed for 360 yards and rushed for 185 and a 4.4 average. The Huskies dominated Murray State with 643 total yards. Northern Illinois rushed for a huge 254 yards from 43 carries. They averaged 5.9 yards per carry. Northern Illinois also passed for 389 yards and 9.8 yards per pass play against Murray State.
If the Huskies can keep up with Ohio State’s offense, they might be able to pull off one of the biggest shockers in college football history.
Why Bet On No. 1 Ohio State (-34.5) to Beat Northern Illinois
Ohio State’s defense will be the deciding factor.
Ohio State is the favorite to win the College Football Playoff again this season because their defense appears to be on par with their offense. Last season, the Buckeyes allowed teams to rack up yardage and points. This season, the defense is turning into a shutdown unit. Pair a shutdown defense with an excellent offense and a football team becomes almost impossible to beat.
The defense gave up 360 yards and 24 points to Virginia Tech in their first game in Week 1. The Hokies got to play against an Ohio State defense lacking 2014 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Joey Bosa. Bosa was suspended for that game. When Bosa returned to the line-up he helpd the Buckeyes dominate against Hawaii by taking on double-teams. Bosa taking on double-teams frees up other Buckeye defenders.
That happened to Hawaii. It’s what could happen to Northern Illinois. If it does, expect the Buckeyes to roll in this matchup.

Ohio State’s offense is going to put up over 50 points against a very suspect Huskies’ defense. If Ohio State’s defense is able to contain the Huskies’ offense, the Buckeyes are going to roll. I am picking the OSU Buckeyes to roll in this game. They are the smart bet even as 34-point spread betting favorites. My final score prediction is Ohio State 56, Northern Illinois 13.
