Why Bet On #8 Oklahoma State (-14) to Beat Iowa State

Oklahoma State’s will want to avenge their 2011 loss to the Cyclones that cost the Cowboys a shot at the BCS..

In 2011, Oklahoma State was 10-0 and ranked second in the nation prior to its game against Iowa State, which was 5-4 (2-4 in the Big 12) at the time. The Cowboys held on to a 24-7 early into the third quarter but lost 37-31 in two overtimes.

They missed a chance to play in the BCS title game, although OSU still won the school’s only Big 12 title after beating the Sooners the next week, ultimately finishing the season ranked No. 3.

“I’ve never really bought into scenarios of revenge and what a team might have done to us last year and so on and so forth,” head-coach Mike Gundy said. “We are a firm believer in preparation and (taking things) day to day, and that’s the easiest way for us to handle those topics.”

This year, in Oklahoma State’s first 2 games of the season versus Central Michigan and Central Arkansas, Oklahoma State failed to cover the spread. Since that time, the Cowboys have been awesome ATS. last week they not only covered the spread but blew out TCU. Now the Cowboys have suddenly inserted themselves into consideration for the College Football Playoff.

“Every opponent is the same, you prepare every week like you have been,” backup quarterback J.W. Walsh said about facing Iowa State. “If you take care of the things you have been taking care of, and doing the little things, it’ll all work out.”

Oklahoma State has gone 6 and 1 ATS in their last 7 games. The reason for their profit-making brilliance rests on the shoulders of the Cowboys’ offense. The offense averages 497.2 yards and 44.6 points per game. Iowa State’s defense yields 460.4 points and 32.1 points per game on average. Texas Tech scored 66, Baylor scored 45, TCU scored 45, and Oklahoma scored 52 against Iowa State’s D. Those were all Iowa State losses.

Why Bet On Iowa State to Beat #8 Oklahoma State (-14)

The Cyclones would love nothing better than to play spoiler again.

Last week, Iowa State lost to the Sooners by a crushing 52-16 score.

“It’s very hard and frustrating,” said WR Allen Lazard, who had eight receptions for 101 yards last week. “The past few games, we’ve had 200 yards rushing every game, so struggling to run the ball makes it harder to pass. They just did a good job of packing the box and making the right calls when we would run the ball.”

Lazard ranks fourth in the Big 12 with 5.4 receptions per game and has gone over 100 yards twice in the past three weeks. With 573 yards, he’s 20 away from matching his total from last year, when he cracked the starting lineup as a true freshman.

“Allen is an unbelievable athlete,” offensive lineman Jamison Lalk said. “What makes him a special player is that he just goes and lays out dudes.”

Even though Iowa State’s defense is a mess, at times the Cyclones can play big on D. Iowa State’s defense is usually very bad, it can come up and play big at times. In its last game, Iowa State yielded 52 points to Oklahoma.

But before that game, Iowa State held Texas to 0 points in a stunning 24 to 0 win at home. In fact, Iowa State’s D plays much bigger at home than it does on the road. The D held Kansas to only 13 points in a 38 to 13 Cyclones’ win on Oct. 3. Even Iowa could only score 31 in a 17 to 31 loss on September 12. Iowa is one of the top teams in college football this season.

Expert Pick & Final Score Prediction

The problem for Iowa State backers in this game is the point spread. The Cyclones are only getting 14 points from Oklahoma State. Iowa State shouldn’t be able to hold the Cowboys to less than 45 points in this. Iowa State’s offense probably can’t keep up. My final score prediction is Oklahoma State 45, Iowa State 23.
