Is Iowa A Smart Betting Pick Over Penn State
The No. 18 Iowa Hawkeyes deserve their ranking with a 6-1 record. However, Iowa hasn’t beaten a ranked team. Their last three Big Ten opponents — Minnesota, Maryland and Indiana — have a combined three conference wins. So is Iowa a smart pick over Penn State to win this matchup?
Iowa is coming off a 23-0 shutout against Maryland while allowing just 258 yards per game. They also only allow 2.72 yards per carry to opponents, the sixth-best mark in FBS. Moreover, Iowa has only allowed one run of 20-plus yards all season, something no other team has done.
Is Penn State A Smart Betting Pick Over Iowa
Penn State lost Saquon Barkley to the NFL this past off-season. The Nittany Lions are now Trace McSorley’s team. The senior QB is one of the country’s best runners at his position, ranking sixth among quarterbacks with 79.1 rushing yards per game. However, his reputation as a gunslinger has stuck even though McSorley has curbed his long bomb tendencies. In the 2016 season, he completed 38 passes of 30-plus yards, tied for second in the country. So far in 2018 McSorley has only eight such pass attempts ranking 66th in the nation.
Over his career, McSorley has thrown for 524 yards completing 42 of 66 passes with three TDs and one INT. Combine that with 31 carries for 101 yards and another score against Iowa and he is a one-man Hawkeye killing machine.
Iowa vs. Penn State Betting Tips
In 2017 the Nittany Lions won 21-19 on the road thanks to a last-second TD. Penn State failed to cover the betting line as a 12.5-point favorite.
Moreover, Iowa state is the less talented team but the Hawkeyes will play for a full 60 minutes and I am betting they cover the betting line as underdogs.
