Why Bet On Louisville To Beat No. 6 Auburn (-10.5)

Auburn’s offense should be okay. Although the Tigers have to replace 3 starters along the offensive line, they should be able to fill the starters with offensive linemen that have experience playing in the SEC. That’s good news for Auburn’s offense versus untested Louisville defense in this first game of the season. QB Jeremy Johnson has experience. He’s more of a drop-back passer. As with Alabama, a more balanced attack that leans on traditional running and drop-back passing should really help the Auburn offense in this game.

But, has the defense improved?  The unit only sacked the QB 10 times in conference play last season. Former head coach at Florida, Will Muschamp, comes in to instill his defensive system that relies on using a “buck” linebacker. Although great, Ellis Johnson, with all of his experience couldn’t turn around Auburn’s defense.

Here’s the thing, the defense at Auburn will never get better unless Gus Malzahn changes the tempo of his offense. The offense will be helped by being more of a drop back passing attack, but unless Auburn finds a way to get its defense off the field by playing a control ball attack, the defense will suffer. It might suffer enough in the first game to where Auburn won’t even cover the spread.

Why Bet On No. 6 Auburn (-10.5) To Beat Louisville

Louisville’s defense was awesome in 2014. The D was ranked sixth in the nation when allowing 308.6 yards per game on average. The team only allowed 21.8 points per game. But, like Auburn, Louisville’s offense didn’t control the clock enough to give their excellent defense a breather. That’s how Louisville lost 4 games overall and 3 in the ACC Conference last season.

This season, things might be worse for the Cardinals. The defense will be good because they play an excellent system and replacing defensive players is almost never as difficult as replacing offensive players. Then again, Louisville has to replace 7 of 11 defensive starters. How long will it take before the defense comes together as a unit?

The biggest question for Louisville is how to replace 3 starters along the offensive line. That could be where Louisville’s biggest issue lies. Coach Bobby Petrino wants to run the football early on in the season. That means pounding the ball into Auburn’s front 7 in this game. It’s a good idea, but unless the O-Line has gelled, Auburn’s defense could dominate.

I am picking the Auburn Tigers to bet over Louisville. My final score prediction is Auburn 42, Louisville 31. According to our college football odds watchers, 52% of the money is landing on the Tigers. In recent action the support for Auburn has dipped by 28%. Happy Hunting!
