Why Bet On LSU (-4.5) To Beat Mississippi State
LSU’s season turned into garbage in 2014 after the Tigers lost 29 to 34 to Mississippi State in their fourth game of the season. The Tigers couldn’t stop QB Dak Prescott. This season, things might be different for the LSU defense.
Even though LSU lost John Chavis to Texas A&M, the replacement coordinator, Kevin Steele, will employ a 3-4 defense. That should work to LSU’s advantage because of the personnel that the Tigers will have along the defensive line. LSU’s strength is in their secondary. Corners Tre’Davious White and Ed Paris are lock down guys. With the 3-4, Steele should be able to assign the strong safety or one of his linebackers to mark Prescott. Prescott is one of those quarterbacks that can beat you with both his arm and his legs. Stopping Prescott from running should be a big part of what Steele and the LSU defense does on Saturday.
One advantage that LSU definitely will have in the 3-4 is that Mississippi State had to replace a tackle, guard and center this season. The center usually calls out the offensive line plays. If Steele is able to get pressure on Prescott, White and Paris could take care of the rest.
Why Bet On Mississippi State To Beat LSU (-4.5)
As much of an advantage that LSU’s defense has over Mississippi State’s offensive line, there is one advantage, and it’s a big one, that Mississippi State’s offense has. Dak Prescott will be the best player on the field for either team.
Prescott was sensational in his junior season. He threw for 3449 yards and 27 touchdowns. He averaged 4.7 yards per carry on the ground when rushing for close to 1000 yards and scoring 14 touchdowns. Prescott dominated LSU in the Bulldogs’ victory over the Tigers in Baton Rouge. He threw for 268 yards and 2 touchdowns without tossing a pick. Prescott rushed for 105 yards from 22 attempts. He ran for a touchdown.
If Dak Prescott gets even some protection from the new offensive line, he might be able to lead the Bulldogs to a second straight upset of the favored LSU Tigers. Prescott is one of the most impressive quarterbacks to play in the SEC in a long time. He needs to work on his decision making, which means that he made the right choice by staying for his senior year to do exactly that.
But as good as Prescott is, Steele switching LSU’s defense to a 3-4 could determine how effective he is in this matchup. LSU has the luxury of spying Prescott in this game in a 3-4. That should be the difference. My final score prediction is LSU 22, Mississippi State 20.
