Why Michigan Is The Smart Bet
The Michigan Wolverines have won three straight games and would like nothing better than to upset unbeaten Wisconsin in Week 12. Michigan has held each of their last three opponents to 14 points or less and each of their last two conference rivals to an identical 10 points. Jim Harbaugh’s squad has also put at least 33 points on the board in each of their last three games and is playing their best football of the season at just the right time after pounding Maryland 35-10 in Week 11 to cash in as a 14.5-point road favorite.
Why Wisconsin Is The Smart Bet
Wisconsin comes into this contest off a convincing 38-14 beatdown over Iowa this past weekend and the Badgers are undoubtedly playing their best offense of the season in putting 38 points or more on the board in three of their last four games. Wisconsin has held each of their last six opponents to 17 points or less while giving up 14 points or less in four of those contests.
Michigan Vs Wisconsin Pick
While Michigan has won three straight – and a convincing 58 percent of public bettors are now backing the Wolverines to at least cover the spread in this Week 12 matchup, I’m a bit perplexed as to why. You see, for me, Wisconsin is clearly the better team on both sides of the ball as they rank 24th in scoring (36.3 ppg) and a stellar third in points allowed nationally (13.4 ppg). Michigan has been mostly fantastic defensively as they rank an impressive ninth in points allowed (16.4 ppg). However, the Wolverines have been mediocre at best for the vast majority of the season offensively and comes into this contest averaging a decent 27.9 points per game (73rd), but certainly not anything close to being high-powered.
I’m expecting Wisconsin’s stout defense to force quarterback John O’Korn into a couple of costly turnovers while shutting down the Wolverines’ rushing attack. Michigan has won three straight, but I’m not impressed, seeing as how they beat a trio of mediocre teams in Rutgers, Minnesota, and Maryland the last three weeks.
Wisconsin’s 38-14 rout over Iowa team on Saturday was a more impressive win than any of Michigan’s last three wins and I like the fact that the Badgers have a chip on their shoulders for being ranked fifth in the AP poll even though they’re undefeated.
The Wolverines are an uninspiring 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven games against a team with a winning record and 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games following an ATS win. Wisconsin is a near-perfect 6-0-1 ATS in their last 7 games in November, a consistent 12-5-1 ATS in their last 18 conference games and 4-0 ATS in their last four meetings against Michigan. Wisconsin wins and covers the chalk!
