College Football Fresno State QB Derek Carr

Mountain West Championship Game Betting – Can Fresno Beat Utah State?

A BCS bid is dead in the water for the Fresno State Bulldogs after losing to San Jose State last weekend, and now their hopes of being crowned conference champions is in jeopardy as they host Utah State in Mountain West Championship Game betting. The Bulldogs dropped from 16th to 23rd in the BCS Rankings following their road loss to the Spartans and are now just natural home line favorites this weekend as they host the pesky Aggies. This is not a lock game by any stretch of the imagination.

Quarterback Derek Carr has had a season to remember, throwing for 4,462 yards and 45 touchdowns. He leads the country in both of those stat categories. Even against San Jose State in defeat, he was incredible. Carr is coming off back-to-back 500+ yard games and has amassed 13 total touchdowns against one pick in his last two outings. But betting on Fresno isn’t about their offensive prowess.

The Fresno State Bulldogs are 3 point favorites over the Utah State Aggies for the MWC Championship Game.

The defense of the Bulldogs is embarrassing. They’ve surrendered 30.2 points against throughout the season, and have also been bombarded on the field by allowing 436.9 total yards against. Carr’s arm is the reason they’re 10-1 SU, but this pathetic defensive front is the main culprit for Fresno’s 4-7 ATS season. It’s also the reason that you have to be tepid about them in Mountain West Championship game betting because if they were the dominant team their record suggests, they’d be much bigger favorites this weekend.

Fresno and Utah haven’t met since 2011 but it’s worth pointing out that the Aggies have dominated them against the spread when they clash. Utah State is just 2-8 SU in their last 10 meetings, but have gone 5-2 ATS in their 7 most recent matchups. Combine that with Utah State’s sly 4-1 SU and ATS record over their past 5 games and you have reason to believe that an upset is brewing in this particular powder keg.

Betting blindly on a game, especially at this point in the year, is hazardous to your wallet’s health. Utah State is a much better team than anyone is willing to give them credit for. They’re ranked 11th in terms of yards against (321.5 total) and points allowed (16.8 points per game). Offensively they can pour it on, averaging 33.9 points per game and 430.7 total offensive yards using a relatively normal approach. This is also a team that owns wins over USC, San Jose State and UNLV this season.

Betting against Fresno State on the spread became easy money for the savvy gamblers out there and the oddsmakers have obviously grown sick and tired of it. But even there, the Bulldogs can’t stop anyone and this Aggies team can get rolling offensively. They’ve breached the 35+ plateau six times this season and the Bulldogs are simply too vulnerable on defense. If they thought losing to San Jose State was bad, just wait until they get railed in Mountain West Championship game betting by the upstart Utah State Aggies.
