NCAAF Betting On The Arizona State Sun Devils

The Arizona State Sun Devils are ranked at No. 18 with 358 total points in last week’s preseason USA Today Coaches Poll. They are also listed at +1000 to win the Pac-12 Conference according college football oddsmakers.

However, the Sun Devils need to answer a few questions if they are going to win the 2014 Pac-12 title.

Who will be the leader on defense after losing nine starters?

Do they have a shot at beating the Stanford Cardinal?

How Will Arizona State Offense Perform in 2014?

Scoring an average of 39.7 points per game, 11th best in the nation, the Arizona State Sun Devils had one of the best offenses in College Football in 2013, and having Senior QB Taylor Kelly for another season can only help this team get better.

Kelly had 37 touchdowns last season, 28 passing and nine rushing, a combined 4,243 yards, 3,635 passing, 608 rushing. The double-threat he makes this offense a difficult to predict.

Now, can he take his game to the next level?

Well he’s bigger and faster. In the offseason, Kelly said he ate five to six meals a day to try to gain weight. He’s up nearly 15 pounds from last year to 210, and yet, he said he posted faster times in offseason conditioning drills.

"The reason why I’m so excited, everybody talks about the dynamic players and that starts with your quarterback," coach Graham said. "We are going to be the most explosive we’ve ever been up front. We’re stronger; we’re bigger, we’re faster which means we’re going to be able to run the football better — we’re a run/play-action pass team.

Leading rusher Marion Grice is gone, but there are a lot of expectations with new starting running back D.J. Foster, who most think is ready to have a bigger role in the tailback department.

WR Jaelen Strong had 71 receptions, 1094 yards and 7 TDs last season; he’s a sophomore who most scouts think is NFL ready. Junior college transfer Eric Lauderdale will join him on the other side of the formation.

How Will Arizona State Defense Perform in 2014?

After losing nine starters from last season, head coach Graham acknowledges his defense’s lack of experience, but he warns against overlooking its talent. Replacing sack-leader Carl Bradford and two-time Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year defensive tackle Will Sutton will come as the two main challenges.

"We got speed,” Graham said. "We’ve got guys that can play. It’s just going to be us coaching them up."

Redshirt freshman safety Marcus Ball, redshirt freshman safety James Johnson, freshman linebacker D.J. Calhoun and freshman defensive lineman Connor Humphreys are among those who could play significant roles.

Can the Sun Devils D gel in time to face powerful offenses in Oregon, UCLA , the new USC, and last but not least Stanford.

Arizona State Final Thoughts

Everyone is rating Arizona higher than I am, but with the inexperience on defense will expose this team to opposing offenses running up the score, especially late in games.
