New Year's Week College Football Bowl Game 5 Star Lock Picks

New Year’s Week College Football Bowl Game 5 Star Lock Picks

It’s New Year’s week around the world and that means this will be my final selection of five-star college football betting picks. Let’s not waste any time and jump right into it.

The Cotton Bowl, which features No. 3 Michigan State vs No. 2 Alabama is one of the lock pick games although the actual lock pick may not be the team that you think it is. Also, I chose a lock pick in the Peach Bowl, which takes place on Dec. 31 before the CFP Semifinal Games. In that one No. 16 Houston battles No. 8 Florida State. My final lock pick game is on Saturday, Jan. 2 when No. 14 Oregon battles No. 10 TCU.

A Closer Look At My New Year’s Week College Football Bowl Game 5 Star Lock Picks

What: Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl
Who: No. 18 Houston Caugars (12-1) at No. 9 Florida State Seminoles (10-2)
When: Thursday, December 31, 2015
Kickoff: 12:00 PM ET
Where: Atlanta, GA
Stadium: Georgia Dome
Spread: Florida State -7
Moneyline: Houston +242 vs Florida State -280

Listen: Houston vs Florida State

Analysis: There is a lot of buzz about Houston. There should be. Coach Tom Herman has already secured two of the top high school defensive football players in the nation for next season.

But those guys won’t help Houston against Florida State in the Peach Bowl. Houston’s only loss occurred to Connecticut, a team with a surprisingly good defense. Florida State’s defense is better than Connecticut’s. The Seminoles allow 15.8 points and 327.7 yards per game on average. FSU even held the number one team in the nation, Clemson, to only 23 points on Nov. 7. Florida could get only a safety in a 27 to 2 Seminoles win on Nov. 28. Florida State’s offense could take apart Houston’s defense.

Pick: Florida State

What: Goodyear Cotton Bowl – CFB Semifinal
Who: No. 3 Michigan State Spartans (12-1) at No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide (12-1)
When: Thursday, December 31, 2015
Kickoff: 8:00 PM ET
Where: Arlington, TX
Stadium: AT&T Stadium
Weather: N/A
Spread: Alabama -9.5
Moneyline: Michigan State +285 vs Alabama -345
Game Total: 49

Listen: Michigan State vs Alabama

Analysis: Alabama is deserving of favoritism, but 9.5 points? That’s a lot of points to give up to a team led by a senior QB. Spartan Connor Cook should be 100% for this. Cook hasn’t been 100% for the past month. He could do a number on Alabama’s secondary if the Spartans line can block the Tide’s rush. All Cook has to do is target WR Aaron Burbridge.

More importantly, the Spartans proved awesome both straight up and ATS in the second half of their season. Michigan State went 6 and 1 straight up in their last 7 games. The Spartans went 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 games. MSU has the edge at QB. That should keep this closer than 10 points.

Pick: Michigan State

Valero Alamo Bowl
What: No. 15 Oregon Ducks (9-3) at No. 11 TCU Horned Frogs (10-2)
When: Saturday, January 2, 2016
Kickoff: 6:45 PM ET
Where: San Antonio, TX
Stadium: Alamodome
Spread: Ducks -1
Moneyline: Oregon -120 vs TCU +100
Game Total: 78
Watch: ESPN

Listen: Oregon vs TCU

Analysis: TCU should be in some trouble in this game. Say what you want about Oregon’s defense, but TCU’s was almost just as bad this season. The Horned Frogs gave up 37 points to SMU, 52 to Texas Tech, 45 to Kansas State, 49 to Oklahoma State and 30 to Oklahoma this season. TCU even allowed Baylor, who was down to their third string QB, to score 21 against them.

Oregon QB Vernon Adams is healthy. He’s quietly had a sensational season. Adams has led a Quack Attack that averages 548.3 yards and 43.2 points per game. The Ducks are balanced on offense with 260.4 yards coming via the pass and 287.9 yards coming via the rush. Oregon finished out their season winning 7 out of their last 8 straight up. The Ducks went 5 and 1 ATS in their final 6 games of the season.

Pick: Oregon
