The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will look to take the first step toward reaching the College Football Playoff when they visit the Texas Longhorns in an intriguing regular season college football betting opener that is offering a ton of value.

The college football week 1 betting line favors the Irish by 3.5-points. The public is 55% on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to cover the spread. The point spread opened at the same line which indicates that the amount wagered is balanced on both sides.

Bet The Texas Longhorns at +3.5 Because…

Because the Longhorns (5-7 SU, 5-7 ATS) are playing ‘at home’ and owe the Fighting Irish some serious payback for the spanking they took last season!

Head coach Charlie Strong is entering a must-win season after failing to record a winning record in each of his first two seasons at the Big 12 school.

On offense, Texas will have a new coordinator in Art Briles disciple Sterlin Gilbert and a new starting quarterback in strong-armed freshman Shane Buechele, the Horns’ top recruit this past offseason.

Texas returns three starters on the offensive line and has a pair of bruising running backs in D’Onta Freeman and Chris Warren, not to mention two gifted wide receivers in John Burt and Collin Johnson.

Defensively, Texas has eight returning starters and added to their defensive line in a big way by signing five top-ranked recruits. 2015 Freshman All-American Malik Jefferson will lead a solid linebacker unit and the Horns look like they could be downright scary in the secondary with sophomore cornerbacks Davante Davis and Holton Hill both looking like future NFL performers even as freshmen a year ago.

Bet The Notre Dame Fighting Irish at -3.5 Because

The Fighting Irish have the huge edge at quarterback in this Week 1 showdown.

Notre Dame  (10-3 SU, 8-5 ATS) finished the 2015 season ranked inside the top 35 in almost every significant offensive category including total yards (466.7 ypg, 26th) and scoring (34.2 ppg, 34th).

Unfortunately, the Irish also lost six starters on offense including a trio that will be playing a the next level in star running back C.J. Prosisse, tackle Ronnie Stanley and wide receiver Will Fuller.

The good news is that Brian Kelly has two gifted quarterbacks in DeShone Kizer and Malik Zaire and he’s already indicated that both will see time in this matchup. Kelly needs to find two new starters on the offensive line, but the Irish are stacked at the wide receiver position and shouldn’t have much trouble replacing Fuller.

Notre Dame finished the 2015 season ranked 45th in total defense, (372.6 ypg) and a respectable 40th in points allowed (24.0 pg).

Unfortunately, the Irish lost stud linebacker in Jaylon Smith and another very good linebacker in Joe Schmidt and needs to find replacements for tackle Sheldon Day, end Romeo Okwara, cornerback KeiVarae Russell and strong safety Elijah Shumate.

College Football Week 1 Free Pick & Final Score Prediction

The Fighting Irish have, not one, but two gifted quarterbacks in Kizer and Zaire and that is reason enough for me to believe Notre Dame will win this matchup and do so convincingly.

The Irish pounded the hell out of the Longhorns in their commanding 38-3 home win last season and are the easy pick to get the road win in this opener after going 6-4 ATS as a favorite a year ago and taking on a mediocre Texas team that went 3-5 ATS as an underdog in 2015.

My College Football Week 1 Pick: Notre Dame 31 Texas 24
