While there’s little doubt that sixth-ranked Penn State will will their 2017 regular season and home opener against the overmatched Akron Zips, the big question surrounding the Nittany Lions’ Week 1 matchup is whether or not they’ll cover the high college football point spread as just over four-touchdown favorites.

Akron Zips Vs Penn State Nittany Lions College Football Week 1 Odds & Pick
Akron Zips (0-0) at Penn State Nittany Lions (0-0)
When: Saturday, September 2 at 12:00 PM ET

Odds: Penn State -30.5
Why Bet the Akron Zips Odds at +30.5
The Akron Zips went 5-7 last season including 3-5 in MAC conference play under head coach Terry Bowden and enter 2017 hoping that quarterback Thomas Woodson after he missed five games last season because of a shoulder injury after tossing an impressive 18 touchdown passes in eight games last season. The Zips also return four starters on the offensive line.
Senior Tra’Von Chapman, who started three games at quarterback last season, will move to wide receiver as Bowden looks to replace his top two receivers from last season in early NFL Draft entree Jerome Lane and JoJo Natson. Akron will also look to improve a rushing attack that has never had a 1,000-yard rusher in Terry Bowden’s five seasons as head coach. Ohio State graduate transfer Warren Ball, could be that back after he rushed for 181 yards on 25 carries in the first two games last year before suffering a season-ending injury.
Defensively, Akron was a mess in allowing a whopping 33.6 points per game, but they have some elite talent starting with junior linebacker Ulysses Gilbert, who earned first-team All-MAC honors last season after recording a team-high 122 tackles, including a stellar 11.5 for a loss. Gilbert also threw in four sacks, eight quarterback hurries and forced fumbles in what was a phenomenal personal campaign a year ago. Three other starters return on defense, including seniors Darius Copeland, Zach Guiser and Alvin Davis but this is a unit that needs to improve in a big way.
Why Bet the Penn State Nittany Lions Odds at -30.5
The Penn State Nittany Lions are a legitimate national championship contender heading into 2017 after winning 11 games and bagging the Big Ten conference title a year ago.
The Nittany Lions have a pair of legitimate Heisman Trophy candidates in quarterback Trace McSorley (3,614 yds, 29 Tds) and running back Saquon Barkley (1,496 yds, 22 Tds) and a bunch of other elite talents all over the field on both sides of the ball. Penn State ranked a stellar 21st in scoring nationally by putting up 37.6 points per game while ranking a solid 47th in points allowed by limiting the opposition to 25.4 points per contest defensively.
Defensively, the Nittany Lions have some holes to fill at defensive end and at linebacker, but again, head coach James Franklin has a bunch of elite talent to work with and has a NFL-ready free safety in Marcus Allen who returns after leading Penn State with 110 tackles last season.
Akron Vs Penn State Week 1 Pick
I know Akron is seriously overmatched in this contest and that they’re just 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games in the month of September and 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games on grass.
I also know that Penn State is 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 home games and 9-1-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall. However, if you ask me, this is a classic ‘trap’ game that Penn State will narrowly fail to cover the spread in. Thanks to my expert research, you now know that the Nittany Lions are 0-4 ATS in their last four games as a favorite between 30 and 35 points. Akron will find a way to not get totally embarrassed.
Pick: Akron +30.5 Points
