The score keeper for the Allstate Sugar Bowl is going to be busy with the high-scoring tilt between the 16th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys and the 12th-ranked Ole Miss Rebels, two of the top scoring offenses in college football.
Offensively, it’s going to be an even matchup. Defense is where this game is won and that is where the Rebels out class the Cowboys. But can Ole Miss overcome the loss of one of their top defensive players in DT Robert Nkemdiche?
Nkemdiche has played his final college game and is headed to the NFL after an incident at an Atlanta hotel as the Rebels and Cowboys meet in the postseason for the third time since 2004 on Friday night.
“While I wish I could have finished this journey with my team, I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of this program, and I am ready to begin the next phase of my life,” Nkemdiche said in a statement.
“I have learned a valuable lesson in the last week, and I look forward to showing NFL personnel that this is not representative of my true character.”
The game kicks off on ESPN on New Year’s day at 8:30 PM ET from the home of the New Orleans Saints, the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in Louisiana.

Bet The Oklahoma State Cowboys +7 Because…
QB Mason Rudolph should be healthy and ready to go. Up until Nov. 21, the Cowboys were undefeated. Rudolph began to suffer nagging injuries on Nov. 21 against Baylor. Even with the injuries Rudolph managed to throw for 430 yards and 3 touchdowns. Against Oklahoma in the next game, though, Rudolph only lasted for 3 passes. A healthy Rudolph could take apart an Ole Miss defense that gave up 53 points to Arkansas and 38 points to Florida, both losses, in the regular season.
“What a great opportunity for our young men who have worked so hard over the last 11 months,” coach Mike Gundy said. “Congrats to Ole Miss and their team. We’re looking forward to a great game in a historic bowl.”
Bet The Ole Miss Rebels -7 Because…
The Rebels finished the season strong. Ole Miss probably should have finished the season going 5 and 0, but the fluke play against Arkansas ended up giving them their only loss in their final 5 regular season games. Ole Miss was spectacular when beating LSU 38 to 17 and handling Mississippi State 38 to 27 on the road. The 27 to 19 win over Auburn on the road was a good one as well. If Ole Miss can take that momentum into the game against Oklahoma State, they should win the Sugar Bowl.
“I’m proud of our program for being one of the few to make it back to a ‘New Year’s Six’ bowl,” coach Hugh Freeze said. “My childhood was spent hearing Rebel fans talk about Archie (Manning) leading us to a Sugar Bowl win, and I’m thrilled for our players, coaches and fans to return to New Orleans and represent the Southeastern Conference.”
Expert Pick & Final Score Prediction
The public is 58% on the Oklahoma State Cowboys to cover the spread. The point spread opened at Ole Miss -6.5. The betting movement to -7 indicates more money is being placed on the side of the Ole Miss Rebels to cover.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys are an average team against the spread (5-5). Oklahoma State Cowboys games have trended over with a record of 8 over, 3 under. Ole Miss Rebels games have trended under with a record of 7 under and 3 over.
TCU pummeled Ole Miss 42 to 3 in the Rebels’ bowl game last season. TCU was good enough to play in the College Football Playoff last season. Oklahoma State is not good enough to play in the College Football Playoff this season. Even though Rudolph is likely to play, he faces a much improved Ole Miss defense from the beginning of the year. Not only that, but the Rebels’ offense is clicking. Ole Miss scored 51, 38 and 38 points in their final 3 games. Ole Miss to win a close one is the play.
My final score prediction is Ole Miss 41, Oklahoma State 37.
