Old Dominion Vs Virginia Tech Betting TipsJosh Bailey
The 13th-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies almost assuredly won’t have any problem beating the overmatched Old Dominion Monarchs when they square off in Blacksburg at Lane Stadium on Saturday, making the only ‘real’ question that college football bettors need answering whether or not the Hokies can cover the spread as huge, nearly four-touchdown home favorites.
Thankfully, that’s where I come in with my expert analysis and pick on this Week 4 mismatch. Let’s get to it!
Old Dominion Vs Virginia Tech Week 4 Betting Tips

Can the Old Dominion Monarchs Win?
Old Dominion fell to 2-1 on the season after getting pounded by North Carolina 53-23 in Week 3 as three Monarchs quarterbacks combined for an uninspiring 14-of-32 passing day for 214 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while running back Jeremy Cox rushed for a team-high 39 yards on 14 carries.
Head coach Bobby Wilder eventually turned to 17-year-old true freshman Steven Williams Jr. who completed 9 of 20 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Now, it looks like Williams will be the future for the Monarchs under center moving forward.
"I just felt like the energy lifted up on our sideline," Wilder said. "It felt like everybody rallied around him."
The Monarchs allowed 511 total yards to North Carolina in Saturday’s loss as they get set to face the first nationally-ranked opponent since joining the FBS four years ago.
"We’ve played some really good ones, but I think Virginia Tech is by far the best team we’ve ever played," Wilder said. "This will be a monumental task on Saturday but one we’ll be excited for."
Can the Virginia Tech Hokies Win?
The Hokies improved to 3-0 on the year by beating the snot out of East Carolina in its 64-17 road win on Saturday while covering the spread as a huge, 27-point favorite. Virginia Tech actually trailed 17-7 after one-quarter before stepping on the gas pedal en route to a stunning 57 straight points.
Quarterback Josh Jackson completed 24 of 31 passes for 372 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions while wide receiver Cam Phillips hauled in a whopping 14 catches for 189 yards and three touchdowns. For the season, Jackson has passed for 829 yards with eight touchdowns and no interceptions. Now, the Hokies are looking to avoid a letdown against the Monarchs as they look forward to their Week 5 matchup against second-ranked Clemson.
"(We’re) really focusing on the next step that’s in front of us," Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente said.
Expert Analysis and Prediction
I don’t know how else to say it, but Old Dominion is in trouble! I know the Monarchs are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six games following a straight-up loss and 4-1 ATS in their last five road games, but they’re also a discouraging 1-4 ATS in their last five games against teams from the ACC.
Conversely, Virginia Tech has gone 6-1 ATS in their last seven games overall, 5-1 ATS in the last six non-conference games and 4-1 ATS in their last five home games. The spread may look huge here, but I say go with the 75 percent of public bettors that like the Hokies to win and cash in!
Pick: Virginia Tech -27.5
