Missouri comes into the game ranked 16th in the nation and off of a loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship Game where the Tigers mustered little fight agasint one of the nation’s most intimidating defensive fronts.
Minnesota was one of the big surprises for bettors in the 2014 college football season. Head coach Jerry Kill had his team in in the running in the Big Ten until the very final game of the regular season against Wisconsin. The Golden Gophers did finish 8-4, boasting three of their four losses coming at the hands of ranked teams.
Minnesota will win the Citrus Bowl if
Score more than 24 points – and keep Mizzou from rolling up 400-plus total yards!
The Minnesota Gophers have their work cut out for them if they want to take down a very good Missouri team and win the 2015 Citrus Bowl. Minnesota has alternated SU wins and losses over their last six games while scoring an eerily identical 24 points in each of their last three losses. The common denominator in all three defeats was the fact that the Gophers allowed at least 400 total yards of offense in each loss.
The good news for Minnesota is that they have an opportunistic defense that tied for 11th in the nation in takeaways (+28) is capable of creating turnovers and giving their offensive teammates a short field. The bad news is that Missouri also has topped the 400-yard plateau in three of their last five games and has its own turnover-causing defense that tied for 20th in the country with a plus-eight finish.
Missouri will win the Citrus Bowl if
They hold the Gophers to less than 31 points – and shut down David Cobb!
Missouri lost three games during the regular season – and gave up at least 31 points in each defeat. If Mizzou plays its ‘normal’ brand of defense and can keep the Gophers from reaching the aforementioned figure, then they’ll have a great chance to win and cover the bowl game betting line.
Missouri will also have to find a way to slow down elusive running back David Cobb who rushed for a school-record 1,545 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns during the regular season.
The good news is that the Tigers finished 30th against the run (135.7 ypg) and an impressive 26th in points allowed (21.4 ppg).
Who will win the Citrus Bowl?
I really like the way Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel has put the Tigers on the map for the better part of the last decade and I believe the outcome of the 2015 Citrus Bowl is closer to an absolute lock than anything else!
Missouri has a serious chip on their collective shoulders after getting man-handled in their 42-13 SEC title game loss to No. 1 Alabama on Dec. 6 and I think the Tigers want to get the bad taste out of their mouths by pounding the Gophers in this one!
I know Minnesota has gone 9-4 ATS in their last 13 non-conference games and an unblemished 4-0 ATS in their last four games, but Missouri is a near-perfect 4-1 ATS in their last five games against a team with a winning record and a bankroll-boosting 19-7-1 ATS in its last 27 games overall.
Mizzou wins and cover the spread with room to spare!
