Orange Bowl Against The Spread Upset Pick – Georgia Tech Vs Mississippi State

The Orange Bowl, after years of hosting BCS bowl games, is one of the more storied bowl games in college football, routinely hosting teams on New Year’s Day since 1935. For just the second time in history, the Orange Bowl will be played before New Year’s Day in Miami when the one touchdown favorite Mississippi State Bulldogs and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets go head-to-head at Sun Life Stadium.

As those who came before then, Georgia Tech almost spoiled FSU’s perfect season, but came up a field-goal short. The Yellow Jackets lost 37-35 to the Seminoles in the ACC Championship Game, but will that be enough to consider this season a success if they lose the 2014 Orange Bowl?

Mississippi State was headed towards a surefire College Football Playoff spot, but squandered all hope with two losses in the final three weeks, including two touchdow defeat in the Egg Bowl to hated in-state rival Ole Miss.

Mississippi State will win the Orange Bowl if

They can stop the Yellow Jackets’ stunning triple option rushing attack!

If the Mississippi State Bulldogs want to win the 2014 Orange Bowl, then they’re going to have to shut down Georgia Tech’s powerful triple option rushing attack.

The Yellow Jackets ranked third in the nation in rushing (333.6 ypg) and racked up a whopping 41 touchdowns on the ground to finish fifth in the country. Mississippi State’s defense will have to find a way to shut down sophomore quarterback Justin Thomas after the dual-threat signal-caller unleashed a stellar campaign in his first year as a starter.

Thomas threw 17 touchdown passes and ran for a team-high 965 yards while running backs Zach Laskey (788) and Synjyn Days (753) both topped the 750-yard plateau. Overall, a whopping 12 Georgia Tech players have rushed for at least 100 yards on the season.

Georgia Tech will win the Orange Bowl if

The can put the clamps on dual-threat quarterback Dak Prescott!

The key to beating Mississippi State (10-2 SU, 7-5 ATS) in the 2014 Orange Bowl is simple – if not quite as easy to accomplish for Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets need to ‘put the clamps’ on gifted dual-threat quarterback Dak Prescott if they’re going to have any chance at winning this intriguing affair.

Prescott threw for 3,935 yards while adding 939 rushing yards and 37 combined touchdowns. Prescott was the only player in the country to finish ranked inside the top 20 in passing (24) and rushing touchdowns (13), so stopping him must be priority No. 1 for the Yellow Jackets.

Georgia Tech will also need to be a bit wary of Mississippi State’s defense even though the SEC powerhouse ranked just 80th in the nation overall.

The Bulldogs came through on defense when it mattered most, finishing the season ranked first in the nation in red zone defense,  10th in scoring and a solid 13th in third-down defense as All-American linebacker Benardrick McKinney consistently made plays all over the field.

Who will win the Orange Bowl?

I love Dak Prescott and I like Mississippi State a lot this season. Still, the more I watched Georgia Tech (10-3 SU, 9-4 ATS) down the stretch, the more impressed I was with the Yellow Jackets.

Having said that, I think the 7-point spread for this contest is a few points too high for a contest that Georgia Tech could very well win outright.

While Mississippi State struggled a bit in dropping two of their final three games, Georgia Tech won five of its last six games, losing only to Florida State 37-35 in the ACC title game on Dec. 6.

With Mississippi State going just 2-4 ATS in its last six games and Georgia Tech going 5-0 ATS in its last five games, I say the Yellow Jackets are a virtual lock to cover the Orange Bowl betting line in this one!
