Why Bet the SMU Mustangs Odds at +19
The SMU Mustangs (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS) spanked Stephen F. Austin 58-14 in their regular season opener and moved to 2-0 by spanking North Texas 54-32 in Week 2 to easily cover the spread as a 12-point home favorite. Quarterback Ben Hicks completed 20 of 39 passes for 312 yards with four touchdowns and one interception while running back Xavier Jones rushed for 74 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries.
For the season, Hicks is completing just 50 percent of his passes for 424 yards with six touchdowns and one interception, although the Mustangs have used three quarterbacks in both of their games this season. Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Joe Craddock has enjoyed playing a trio of quarterbacks in both games this season and insists there’s no controversy
"My whole group played good. I’m a happy coach right now," Craddock said. "I think you guys thinks there’s a lot of controversy. There’s no controversy in my room. My guys love each other. They’re helping each other out. They’re cheering for each other when they did good."
Defensively, SMU is allowing 23 points per game while linebacker Mikial Onu leads the Mustangs with 16 tackles.
Why Bet the TCU Horned Frogs Odds at -19
The TCU Horned Frogs (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) rolled all over Jackson State 63-0 in their opener two weeks ago and overpowered Arkansas in their 28-7 Week 3 win to cover the spread as a 3-point road dog. Previously inconsistent quarterback Kenny Hill completed 21 of 31 passes for 166 yards with no touchdowns and one interception against the Razorbacks but is completing a fantastic 72.2 percent of his passes for 372 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. TCU overpowered Arkansas up front on both lines.
“You guys are all sitting here surprised because you didn’t think it would happen that way,” TCU coach Gary Patterson said. “That’s why you’re asking me those questions. And I’m not surprised. I’ve been telling you, but you haven’t been listening. I’m just proud of my guys. It’s a tough place to play.”
Running back Darius Anderson rushed 15 times for 106 yards and one score while fellow back Sewo Olonilua added two rushing scores and fellow back Kyle Hicks added another rushing score in the win. Defensively, TCU has been outstanding in limiting the opposition to just 3.5 points per game.
SMU vs TCU Betting Analysis and Pick
While SMU has gotten off to a nice 2-0 start, it is the TCU Horned frogs that have been really impressive this season, especially in their Week 2 road win over Arkansas.
While SMU has gone 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games and an identical 5-1 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games and TCU is a winless 0-9 ATS in their last 9 home games, I’m going to advise you to back the Horned frogs to get the win and ATS cover at home, seeing as how they’ve won five straight against SMU including their 33-3 road win as a 21.5-point favorite last season. TCU has outscored SMU 145-40 in the last three meetings and they’ll win this one handily to cover the spread as well.
Pick: TCU -19
