South Carolina Vs Clemson Rivalry Week Betting Line

Clemson battles South Carolina for the one-hundred and twelfth time this Saturday in one of the more interesting ACC versus SEC historical battles. Clemson leads the all-time series with a fantastic 65 to 42 record, but South Carolina has owned Clemson in recent years. The college football online betting line has the hometown Tigers as 4.5 point favorites over the visiting Gamecocks during Rivalry Week.

South Carolina is on a five game winning streak that started in 2009. This season, though, South Carolina isn’t as nearly as formidable as it has been in past seasons. Will Clemson take advantage and end the losing streak?

Analyzing The South Carolina Vs Clemson Rivalry Week Betting Line

The key in this game, and one of the reasons that so many sports books haven’t offered a line yet, is whether or not freshman QB starter, DeShaun Watson, will suit up for the Tigers. Watson is listed as questionable because of a knee injury that he suffered against Georgia Tech.

Without Watson, Clemson might have trouble moving the ball. The Tigers are a different team, a bad one, with senior QB Cole Stoudt under center. Stoudt has thrown only 6 touchdown passes to 9 interceptions. With Stoudt, the Tigers don’t score a lot of points and because he routinely turns the ball over, the Clemson defense is always put into a bad position.

That’s a shame because the Tigers’ defense is ranked first in the nation in yards allowed. Opponents average 252.4 yards per game against the Tiger D. Teams rush for barely over 100 yards and they throw for only 151.5 yards. Even with Stoudt playing most of this season, the Tigers defense is so good that opponents only average 17.6 points per game.

The big question is whether or not South Carolina’s offense can take advantage. The Gamecocks should be able based on their stats. South Carolina averages 461 yards and 4.8 points per game. Defensively, if it’s Stoudt, the Gamecocks are going to have a field day, but if it’s Watson, the D can be exploited since it gives up 428.4 yards and 30.8 points per contest.

The trends give the game to South Carolina. The Gamecocks are 4 and 0 against the spread in their last 4 games versus the ACC, they’re also 3 and 1 ATS in their last 4 and 2 and 0 ATS in their last 2 games while Clemson is a terrible 0 and 6 against the spread in their last 6 games overall.

With Watson, Clemson has a good shot at beating South Carolina. But if Watson plays, the betting line should be much higher than the -4.5. Clemson might actually be a close to 7 point favorite. The guess here is that the Tigers, since they have no shot of winning the ACC, will keep Watson out for this game. There is no reason to ruin next season in order to beat 6 and 5 South Carolina. Clemson will get a bowl bid. Why not save Watson for the bowl game?

South Carolina is the pick in this matchup. The Gamecocks don’t have as good of a defense as Clemson does, but there’s a good chance that the Tigers keep their prized freshman off the football field yet again.
