Why Bet the Wisconsin Badgers Spread at -17
Wisconsin (2-0 SU, 1-1ATS) moved to 2-0 by beating Florida Atlantic 31-14 in Week 2 although they never came close to covering the spread as a whopping 34.5-point home favorite. Quarterback Alex Hornibrook completed 16 of 28 passes for 201 yards with one touchdown and one interception, but it was freshman running back Jonathan Taylor that carried the Badgers by rushing for a stellar 223 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries.
Fellow running back Chris James added 101 rushing yards on 16 carries while No. 1 wide receiver Troy Fumagalli caught a team-high eight passes for 92 yards and one score. Defensively, Wisconsin racked up five sacks while limiting the Owls to just nine first downs and 2-for-14 success on third down.
"I think they’ve got a good system and they understand it,” Badgers head coach Paul Chryst said of BYU’s defense. "I think they’ve got good skill in the secondary, and they play hard. They’ve got good players. They’ve got physical players and enough movement and pressures — a lot of different types of pressures you have to prepare for."
Why Bet the BYU Cougars Spread at +17
The Cougars (1-2 SU, 0-3 ATS) put up a good effort, but suffered their second straight loss while falling to in-state rival Utah 19-14 while failing to cover the college football betting line as a 4.5-point home underdog. Quarterback Tanner Mangum completed 21 of 39 pass attempts for 170 yards with one touchdown, but also tossed three costly interceptions his team could not overcome. He injured his ankle on the final drive against Utah last Saturday and his status for this matchup is questionable.
“Until we can get more confirmation, we don’t know,” head coach Kalani Sitake said on Monday. “It’s hard to get confirmation since we don’t do anything Sunday.”
BYU was held to just 63 rushing yards in the loss and failed to get on the scoreboard in the first half. Defensively, BYU recovered a pair of fumbles and held the Utes to just 3 of 14 success on third down, although they allowed Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley to pass for 300 yards while adding another 89 rushing yards and once score on the ground.
Wisconsin Vs BYU ATS Pick
Wisconsin struggled offensively after putting a whopping 59 points on the board in their opener, but I’m going to say the badgers get the win and ATS cover after seeing how LSU spanked BYU 27-0 in the regular season opener for both teams two weeks ago.
Wisconsin has gone a perfect 6-0 ATS in their last 6 road games and 13-6 ATS in their last 19 road games against a team with a losing home record while BYU has gone 0-4 ATS in their last four games and a discouraging 2-6 ATS in their last eight home games. Wisconsin should contend for the Big Ten title this year and a berth in the four-team playoff while BYU is looking more like a seven-win team that is just hoping to appear in a decent bowl game. Besides, if Tanner Mangum tossed three picks last week, that tells me he’s in for more trouble against Wisconsin’s lockdown defense.
Pick: Wisconsin -17
