Stanford Cardinal Vs Iowa Hawkeyes Spread, ATS Pick & Betting Tips

This season’s Rose Bowl won’t determine a participant in the National Championship, but will return to the traditional matchup of the Big Ten and Pac-12. It is shaping up to be a great game as sixth-ranked Stanford battles seventh-ranked Iowa at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on January 1, 2016. Kick-off is at 5:00 pm ET.

No bowl game is older than the Rose Bowl, which hosted its first game on New Year’s Day in 1902 between Stanford and Michigan. Since 1999, it has rotated through a few different title sponsors and is currently known as The Rose Bowl presented by Northwestern Mutual.

This game figures to be an old-fashioned slug fest between two teams who are known for developing offensive linemen and run pro-style offenses. A lot of this game could be played in a phone booth. However, both teams have offensive weapons this year to spread the field. McCaffrey is an obvious gamebreaker, and Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard showed off his strong arm with an 85-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Tevaun Smith in the Big Ten Championship Game. We could be in for an exciting game, both for those who like old school football and those who like big plays.

Bet The Stanford Cardinal -7 Because…

RB Christian McCaffrey is unstoppable. McCaffrey is Stanford’s Mr. Do Everything. He finished second in the Heisman Trophy Voting to Alabama’s Derrick Henry. McCaffrey rushed for 1847 yards and 8 touchdowns. His per carry average was a sensational 5.8. He caught 41 passes for 541 yards and scored 4 touchdowns. His per pass reception average was an awesome 13.4. McCaffrey single-handedly destroyed the USC defense in the Pac 12 Championship by rushing for 207 yards on 32 carries and catching 4 passes for 105 yards. He scored a TD rushing and a TD catching. He also passed for a TD.

Bet The Iowa Hawkeyes +7 Because…

Iowa might be the most well-coached team in college football. The Hawkeyes only went 7-5-1 against the spread this season. But, up until the 13 to 16 loss to Michigan State in the Big Ten Championship Game, Iowa had been undefeated. On paper, the Hawkeyes don’t look like a team that should be playing in the Rose Bowl. The reason that they are is because of Coach Kirk Ferentz. Ferentz is a master at game-planning for the team that Iowa plays that week. He strategized to a 10 to 6 road win over Wisconsin and he strategized to a 28 to 20 win over Nebraska. Both of those wins, in very different ways, were on the road.

Expert Pick & Final Score Prediction

Stanford is a very talented team. You don’t destroy USC and beat a team like Notre Dame unless you are a good team. But, as good as Stanford is, Iowa has the brilliant Kirk Ferentz on their sideline. Ferentz will have more than enough time to come up with a game plan on defense to downgrade McCaffrey’s influence in this game. Expect Iowa to upset Stanford in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 2016.

My final score prediction is Iowa 27, Stanford 25.
