How To Bet Tennessee Vols Vs Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Week 1 College Football Odds
Tennessee Volunteers (9-4) at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (9-4)
When: Monday, September 4, 2017 at 8:00 PM ET
Where: Mercedes-Benz Stadium
Odds: Tennessee -3
Why Bet Tennessee Volunteers Odds at -3
The best reason to back Tennessee in this contest is that they’ve got more overall talent on their roster.
Tennessee (9-4 SU, 6-7 ATS) went 4-4 in the SEC East to finish second to Florida and will have a new starting quarterback under center in Quinten Dormady, following the departure of former starter Joshua Dobbs.
Now, heading into his fifth season at Tennessee, head coach Butch Jones also needs to find some consistent contributors at the skill positions behind running back John Kelly and wide receiver Jauan Jennings. The Vols averaged a healthy 36.4 points per game last season to rank 24th nationally in scoring, but they look like they could be hard-pressed to duplicate those kinds of numbers in 2017.
Defensively, the Vols gave up a generous 28.8 points per game to finish 70th nationally and lost all-time sacks leader Derek Barnett to the NFL Draft. Tennessee has some question marks at all three levels but does have a pair of standout defensive backs in Todd Kelly Jr. and Nigel Warrior.
Why Bet Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Odds at +3
The best reason to bet on Georgia Tech is that this is basically a home game for them.
Now, heading into his tenth season, head coach Paul Johnson is looking to help his Yellow Jackets (9-4 SU, 7-4-1 ATS) to another step toward playoff contention after going went 4-4 in the ACC Coastal division a year ago. Georgia Tech averaged 28.2 points per game to rank 70th in scoring last season, but they’ll have a new starting quarterback this season with Matthew Jordan taking over with nine passes last year for one touchdown and one interception. Running back Dedrick Mills will get the most carries in Johnson’s triple option offense although Clinton Lynch and J.J. Green are also expected to be regular contributors.
Defensively, the Yellow Jackets have eight returning starters and an experienced secondary led by twins Lawrence and Lance Austin, but there are question marks at linebacker and on the defensive line. Still, the Yellow Jackets limited their opponents to an average of 24.5 points per contest to rank an encouraging 39th nationally.
Tennessee Vs Georgia Tech Week 1 Expert Analysis and Prediction
While Tennessee has gone 6-0 ATS in their last six neutral-site games, Georgia tech has gone 3-0-1 ATS in their last four neutral-site games, a perfect 4-0 ATS in their last four games, an identical 4-0 ATS in their last four non-conference games and an encouraging 5-1 ATS in their last six games against teams from the SEC.
This game looks like a thriller just waiting to happen, but in the end, I’m going with Georgia Tech based on the fact that they look like the better defensive team in this matchup and are again, playing what basically amounts to a huge home contest for them.
