The 11th-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish are looking for a little redemption. They lost four of their last five games and went a disappointing 1-5 against the spread over their last six contests. Why Bet On The Texas Longhorns To Beat the Fighting Irish (-9.5)

Texas has switched from a traditional run and drop back passing offense to a spread attack, up-tempo offense. The switch is supposed to utilize the skills displayed by starting QB Tyrone Swoopes and freshman Jerrod Heard. Swoopes will be the starter under center for Texas when the Longhorns face the Irish.

Because Coach Charlie Strong really believes in the freshman, don’t be surprised if Heard makes an appearance in this game. Heard has all of the tools to be an effective spread attack quarterback. Swoopes has some talent but his decision making definitely leaves something to be desired. He finished 2014 with 13 TDs and 11 interceptions. He is only 5 and 7 as a starter.

He’s got a new resolve and a new purpose about himself because of the criticism that came his way,” assistant head for offense and quarterbacks coach Shawn Watson is quoted in The Dallas Morning News. “It’s developed an edge in him, so we’ll see how far that takes him.”

Neither Swoopes nor Heard will benefit from an inexperienced offensive line. Swoopes and Heard won’t benefit from playmaking wide receivers, either. It’s going to be interesting to see how the new offense handles Notre Dame’s defense in this first game.

Texas does have a decent defense. The switch to a spread, up-tempo attack, could be worrisome, especially versus the eleventh ranked Irish, because the talented Texas D might have to play way more minutes than they should unless Swoopes and Heard can get the offense going.

Texas Vs Notre Dame Betting Trends:

  • Texas Longhorns 5-2 On Road since last season
  • Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3-4 At Home since last season
  • Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3-5 As Favorite since last season
  • Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2-4 As Home Favorite since last season

Why Bet On Notre Dame (-9.5) To Beat The Longhorns

Notre Dame’s defense is loaded. Joe Schmidt is happy and healthy. Schmidt missed the final 5 games of Notre Dame’s regular season. The Irish lost 4 out of the 5. With Schmidt back, the defense should be marvelous again. It held opponents to an average of 12 points a game when going 6 and 1 in the Irish’s first 7 games.

For Notre Dame to cover the spread in this matchup against Texas, it’s their offense that is going to have to play well. On paper, the offense looks to have a ton of talent. Sophomore QB Malik Zaire could be a Heisman Trophy candidate if he can start passing the ball the way that he can run it. Zaire will work behind a very talented offensive line. Tareen Folston could end up as one of the top running backs in college football. Wide receiver William Fuller is good enough to turn NFL scouts’ heads.

But the offense has to perform at a high-level versus a very good Texas defense. Zaire has to make the sort of decisions that he made in Notre Dame’s 31 to 28 win over LSU in the Motor City Bowl last season.

“There’s probably been a little bit of a shift in our identity from going into spring until now,” offensive coordinator Mike Sanford was quoted in the USA Today. “Because of personnel situations, I think obviously the quarterback, itself, settling that has definitely changed how we’re going to go about attacking defenses, whatever that may be.”

I am picking the Fighting Irish to win this game by more than two TDs. They will cover the spread and my final score prediction is Notre Dame 28, Texas 10. With 51% of the action coming in on the Longhorns, my college football betting pick is going against the public opinion.
