Bet UC Davis at +46.5 Because
There is absolutely no good reason to back the UC Davis Aggies in this affair.
UC Davis went 2-9 last season and 2-6 in Big Sky conference play. The Aggies are an awful 9-25 under head coach Ron Gould the last three seasons but returns starting quarterback Ben Scott and starting wide receivers Manusamoa Luuga and Chris Martin.
Defensively, UC Davis allowed a whopping 34.2 points and 448.0 yards per game last season. Linebacker Darryl Graham returns after recording a team-high 76 tackles and the Aggies will also rely on lineman Brandon Weaver and defensive back Patrick Wells in 2016.
Bet Oregon at -46.5 Because
The Ducks are far superior to UC Davis in every way.
Just like last season, Oregon will turn to an FCS graduate transfer at quarterback to lead them where they want to go in 2016. Head coach Mark Helfrich will hand over the reins of his offense to Montana State All-American Dakota Prukop one year after naming former Eastern Washington University star Vernon Adams as is starter.
Prukop passed for over 3,000 yards at Montana State last season with 28 TD passes, but it is his added ability to run the ball that could make the Ducks as dangerous as they were with mobile Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota a couple of seasons ago. Prukop rushed for 1,763 yards and 24 touchdowns the last two seasons and could give Oregon’s opponents nightmares in 2016.
The Ducks will have to overcome the losses of three starting offensive linemen, but they have an elite running back in junior Royce Freeman that rushed for a stellar 1,838 yards and 17 touchdowns while adding another 348 yards and two scores on 26 receptions. The receiving corps lost No. 1 wideout Bralon Addison to the NFL, but there is plenty of talent in Eugene to replace him with.
Defensively, the Ducks will switch to an aggressive 4-3 defense under new coordinator Brady Hoke in 2016. Oregon have to overcome the loss of gifted defensive end DeForest Buckner and three linebackers with starting experience, but junior end Henry Mondeaux looks like another star in the making for the Ducks. The secondary returns nearly every player from 2015, but improvements are in order after the Ducks gave up an insane 306.5 passing yards per game to finish 126th nationally.
Expert Pick & Final Score Prediction
UC Davis has some decent talent on their roster, but not nearly enough to keep the final score of this Week 1 mismatch respectable.
I fully expect Oregon to light up the scoreboard in big way as they try to impress voters, but it won’t matter, the Ducks are expect to rout the Aggies, which they will. If the Ducks don’t win this contest by at least 30 points, I’ll be completely stunned.
