College Football Week 14 Lock Alert Picks

UCLA Bruins 2014 Season Betting Preview

Known more for their triumphs on the hard-court, the recent success of the UCLA Bruins football program under Jim More Jr has put this team on the map as one of the top teams in the country. 19 wins in the last two seasons will make 2014 a year of big goals for them.

The only time UCLA has won the national title was is 1954 and oddsmakers are bullish at +1400 for the Bruins to win the college football playoffs.

“UCLA showed a tremendous commitment to me; they trusted me by hiring me. I love it here. I don’t want to go anywhere”, head coach Mora said about recent rumors saying he was considering another job.

“I’m staying there until they kick me out.”

How Will UCLA’s Offense Perform in 2014?

In 2013, the UCLA Bruins averaged close to 37 points per game, good for 21st best in the country. QB Brett Hundley was a big part of that success by throwing for 2845 yards, 22 passing TDs and 9 rusing TDs.

Hundley is back for his redshirt junior season and Mora wants him blossom into an All-American threat so he can start being considered for the NFL draft in the upcoming years.

“People have a tendency at times to see an African-American quarterback and say, ‘Oh, he’s a runner.’ I hate that stereotype and I always have,” said Mora of Hundley. “I coached Michael Vick and my belief (is) that we stereotype those guys started with him. I don’t want that to happen with Brett, and I’m going to make sure that it doesn’t, because it shouldn’t.

“The guy’s a passer.”

Hundley also led the team in rushing yards last season with 748 yards, but the team wants to add bring speed and power of their tailback duo of Jordon James and Paul Perkins. Perkins averaged 4.5 yards per carry in 2013 and scored five TDs.

If Mora expects us to keep believing Brett Hundley is a pure passer then he needs to make a game plan that adjusts to the lack of playmakers in the wide receiver department. 2013 leading receiver Shaq Evans is now in NFL and Junior Devin Lucien and sophomore Thomas Duarte needs to step up to the plate.

Brett Hundley is listed +1600 to win the Heisman Trophy this season, according the College Football Future Betting odds.

How Will UCLA’s Defense Perform in 2014?

Pass rusher Anthony Barr had 23 sacks over the last two seasons, but he has upgraded locker rooms to the NFL and its anybodies guess on how the Bruins D will replace Barr.

UCLA allowed 23.2 points per game last season, which is good considering the PAC-12 Conference is known for its creativity on offense, but if they want to contend for the championship in January this team has signicant work to do to lower their points against.

Sophomore linebacker Myles Jack will fill a hold on defense left by the aforementioned Barr after he recorded 75 tackles and two interceptions in 2013. Throw in sophomore nose tackle Kenny Clark, who is considered as one of the most promising talents in the nation and this team will give fits to opposing offenses.

However, the most improved positoin on defnese is the secondary, where I expect cornerback Fabian Moreau to cause problems downfield against opposing WRs and guarantee himself a spot in the early rounds in next year’s NFL draft.

Coach Jim Mora’s success arrived quicker than expected, but the reality is he set the bar high for this third year. The UCLA Bruins are expected to have a shot at the National Championship if they can knockout the Oregon Ducks in the battle for the Pac-12 title.
