Why Bet On Connecticut to Beat No. 21 Missouri (-21.5)
Undefeated Connecticut is getting no respect versus Missouri this Saturday. The Huskies have one of the better defenses in football based on their first 2 games, both wins. Versus Villanova in Week 1, the Huskies held the Wildcats to 303 total yards. Villanova could score only 15 points and Connecticut won 20 to 15.
In Week 2, Connecticut kept army to only 17 points in a 22 to 17 win. Army has one of the top rushing offenses in all of college football. Even though the Huskies allowed the Black Knights to rush for an average of 5.5 yards per carry, Connecticut kept Army to only 180 total yards on the ground. The Black Knights usually rush for 218 yards per game and score 26 points per.
Connecticut’s defense has a bend but don’t break philosophy. It gives up yards, 284 on average per game, but it doesn’t give up touchdowns. The Huskies’ D is yielding an average of 16 points per game. If Connecticut’s defense can be as effective versus Missouri’s high-powered offense as it was against Villanova’s and Army’s offenses, the Huskies might be able to pull off the upset.
Why Bet On 22 Missouri (-21.5) to Beat Connecticut
Missouri is an interesting team. It doesn’t have one unit that’s really any better than the other. Most teams, like Oregon or Alabama, has one unit that keeps it winning ball games. Oregon’s entire philosophy is based on outscoring its opponents. The Ducks’ defense can’t shut anybody down. Alabama’s philosophy is to play great defense. Alabama’s defense is one of the best in the nation. Its offense is very good, but the defense is the much better unit.
Sometimes, Missouri wins with its offense and then sometimes Missouri wins with its defense. In Week 1, Missouri beat I-AA Southeast Missouri State 34 to 3. The Tigers’ D shut down Southeast Missouri State’s offense. The Tigers’ offense exploited Southeast Missouri’s defense. In Week 2, Missouri’s defense really stepped it up in the second half.
Missouri’s quarterback threw 2 interceptions. That led to 17 Arkansas State points in the second quarter. Missouri’s D held the Red Wolves to only 3 second half points. Missouri beat Arkansas State 27 to 20. The Tigers can lean on either unit in order to win games.
If both Missouri’s offense and defense are playing well, Connecticut doesn’t stand much of a chance in this matchup. I am picking Mizzou minus the points and the Over-41.5 as the smart bet. That’s right the Missouri Tigers will cover the betting spread over UConn in their college football week 3 tilt. My final score prediction is Missouri 34, Connecticut 17.
