The winless, 27.5-point underdog UMass Minutemen are in South Bend to face the 6th-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The game kicks off on NBC this Saturday, Sept 26th at 3:30 PM ET. Cord-cutters can stream the game live on NBCsports.com.
Notre Dame owns college football’s best winning % record at 732 with 885 victories in 127 seasons. They are also the only team to open with three straight victories against Power Five conference opponents. So the gargantuan double-digit spread is expected.
UMass has not beaten a Power Five team in 10 games since joining Div-1 in 2012. The Minutemen have an overall .132 winning percentage in those three seasons.

Why Bet On UMass to Beat #6 Notre Dame (-28)
UMass is 0-23 straight up in September games.
After a terrible first game where Colorado absolutely pummeled the Minutemen 48 to 14, UMass came back and played exceptionally well versus the Temple Owls. Temple is one of the better teams in the AAC. UMass, as a 13.5 point home dog, played Temple to a 2 point loss. The Owls beat the Minutemen 25 to 23.
In that game, UMass QB Blake Frohnapfel passed for 393 yards and 3 touchdowns. Frohnapfel is 6’ 6” and 238 pounds. He’s a tall quarterback that can see over the defensive line. He doesn’t have the best wide receivers, which is why he completes only 55.1 % of his passes. Frohnapfel is a fifth year senior that can break down a defense when given time.
UMass is going to need Frohnapfel to be at his best versus the Irish on Saturday. The Minutemen average 96 yards per game on the ground. The rushing attack figures to be non-existent against the Irish. But, if Frohnapfel is able to get it going in the passing game, UMass might be able to put some points on the board.
Why Bet On #6 Notre Dame (-28) to Beat UMass
Notre Dame’s offense keeps on ticking.
Georgia Tech over Notre Dame was one of the hot wagers in college football last week. The thinking was that without QB Malik Zaire, Notre Dame was going to find it tough to put points on the board. But, this is Notre Dame and Coach Brian Kelly believes in creating a winning system before counting on any single player.
Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer was sensational versus Georgia Tech. He completed 21 of 30 passes for 240 yards, a TD and an interception. What had to have made Kelly even more happy is the fact that his running back, C.J. Prosise, dominated the Yellow Jackets with a 198 yards and 3 touchdowns performance. Prosise led a Notre Dame rushing attack that yielded 6.8 yards per carry and 219 total yards on the ground.
The Big Picture: Brian Kelly is 36-5 when relying on back-up QBs..but how? Ranking the Top10; Uptempo Saban=Oregon? http://t.co/5HtRVssqe8

UMass is allowing an average of 228.5 yards per game on the ground. The Minutemen are giving up 279.5 yards per game on average. Notre Dame figures to have their way with the Minutemen defense. The Irish offense is going to put up a ton of points in this game.
Frohnapfel will try and do his part to keep it close, but the chances of that happening aren’t very good. Notre Dame is a complete team on both offense and defense. Expect the Irish to destroy UMass on Saturday. I am picking Notre Dame as the smart bet versus UMass in this week 4 college football game. They will cover the 27.5-point spread. My final score prediction is Notre Dame 48, UMass 7.
