USC vs ASU Week 4 Betting Line, Final Score Prediction & TV Info

College football week 4 betting action crescendos with the 19th-ranked USC Trojans facing the 5.5-point underdog ASU Sun Devils. This game is giving So Cal nasty flashbacks. It was 2013 when the Trojans last visited Tempe and were sent packing after a devastating 62-41 loss to the Sun Devils. Then a few hours later on the LAX tarmac after the flight home, then head-coach Lane Kiffin was given his walking papers.

Why Bet on #19 USC (-5.5) to Beat ASU

QB Cody Kessler has the football IQ to beat the ASU blitz.

Once again, the USC Trojans were ranked in the Top 10, went into a battle versus nemesis Stanford, and lost. It’s difficult to explain how a team that had given up only 15 points in two straight games allowed a team like Stanford to score 41 against it.

That’s exactly what happened to the Trojans in their last battle, a 31 to 41 loss to Stanford. If there is any positive to take out of the loss it’s that once again QB Cody Kessler was brilliant. Kessler completed 25 of 32 throws for 272 yards and 3 touchdowns. For the season, Kessler has thrown 10 touchdowns and no interceptions. He’s passed for 922 yards. He’s completing 78.7% of his passes.

Kessler threw for 273 yards against ASU’s defense in last year’s game between these two. He didn’t throw a TD nor did he throw an interception. ASU’s defense isn’t as stout this season as it was last season. The difference is that ASU’s penchant for blitzing quarterbacks can leave it vulnerable to long passes downfield. The Sun Devils also become vulnerable to the draw when they blitz.

Kessler is a better QB this season than last season. He should have no trouble leading the USC offense against Arizona State’s blitz happy defense in this matchup.

Why Bet On ASU to Beat #19 USC (-5.5)

The Sun Devils have won 3 of the last 4in the series — including last year’s Hail Mary for the win.

A lot was made regarding ASU’s offense this season. The Sun Devils lost their starting QB and best wide receiver to the NFL. QB Mike Bercovici played well last season, but would he be able to play well this season without WR Jaelen Strong?

Bercovici was a mess in ASU’s first game of the season. He passed for only 199 yards and a single TD. ASU got trounced 17 to 38 by Texas A&M. Bercovici did much better in ASU’s next 2 games. He passed for 283 yards and 3 touchdowns versus Cal Poly and then he passed for 317 yards and 3 touchdowns versus the University of New Mexico. Bercovici tore up USC’s defense last season. He passed for 510 yards and 5 touchdowns.

If Bercovici is able to repeat his performance this year against the Trojans, USC might be in some trouble. That probably won’t happen. Even though Bercovici appears to have turned things around, ASU’s rushing attack doesn’t appear capable enough of supporting Bercovici and the passing attack in this game. Plus, Jaelen Strong caught 10 Bercovici passes for 202 yards and 3 touchdowns in last year’s 38 to 34 win over the Trojans. Strong is gone. USC should turn the tables on ASU this season. I am picking the USC Trojans as the smart bet to beat ASU. My final score prediction is USC 42, ASU 27.
