Usually, USC is the team that UCLA aspires to be. That’s not true this season where UCLA is ranked higher than USC and are in a position to, should they beat USC, make it to the Pac 12 Championship Game. Who will step up in the Battle of L.A.?

Analyzing My USC Vs UCLA Week 13 Betting Pick

Oregon is 3 games ahead in the Pac 12 North standings with a 6 and 1 record in the conference. The Ducks are well on their way to the Pac 12 Championship, but in the Pac 12 South, there is a log jam up top.

USC is at 6 and 2 in the Pac while Arizona, Arizona State and UCLA are all at 5 and 2. The winner of this contest on Friday between USC and UCLA could go a long way in determining which team represents the Pac 12 South in the title game against Oregon. USC battles Notre Dame after this, but UCLA takes on Stanford. The Bruins could end up going 7 and 2 in the Pac 12, meaning that their chances of facing Oregon in the championship rise by a wide margin with a victory over their cross-town rivals.

This game, like it is in most seasons, should be very close. After stubbing their toes versus Utah and Oregon, the Bruins have come back strong with 4 straight victories. UCLA has also covered in two in a row and showed that they could play some defense when holding Arizona to 7 points in a 17 to 7 victory two games ago.

The 44 to 30 destruction of Washington before a bye week is a sign that the Bruins’ offense is playing about as well as it can be playing. Quarterback Brett Hundley has put up Heisman like numbers in UCLA’s last 5 games. His TD to interception ratio is 8 to 2 in the last 5 matchups. He completed 80.6% of his passes versus Washington. Overall, UCLA is averaging 489 yards per game and over 37 points.

USC’s offense isn’t as efficient, 458 yards and 5 points, but the defense is solid. It gives up less than 24 points and less than 400 yards per contest. The problem that USC has is that their bench just doesn’t appear to be all that strong. The Trojans allow teams to get back into the game in the fourth quarter. Against California in the Trojans’ last contest, as an example, USC took a 31 to 10 lead into halftime only to beat Cal by a measly 8 points in a 38 to 30 victory. Cal outscored USC 21 to 7 in the second half.

There are two trends that sum up this game on Saturday. The home team is 8 and 3 against the spread in their last 11 games and USC is 1 and 4 against the spread in their last 5 meetings at UCLA.

Those two trends, along with USC’s penchant for squandering leads, means that UCLA is the team to back in this very important Pac 12 game on Saturday.

Week 13 Betting Pick: UCLA -3.5
