Why Bet On Virginia To Beat UCLA (-20)

Virginia had all sorts of issues rushing the football last season. The Cavaliers have an experienced offensive line. If they wish to have any shot of covering the spread versus UCLA in the first game of the season, they’re going to have to run the ball well. Virginia has 10 players with experience along the offensive line. But, the O-Line only contributed to 138 yards rushing per game last season.

Virginia has to run the ball because QB Matt Johns has struggled. One game where Johns didn’t struggle was versus UCLA last season. He threw for 2 touchdowns and 154 yards in that matchup. Johns only completed 13 of 22 passes. Will he be able to find his best stride in this game?  He will if the offensive line can open up holes for the running game. That would definitely create opportunities for Johns to go down the field. Wide receivers Canaan Severin and T.J. Thorpe have some talent. Thorpe is a senior who transferred from North Carolina.

A decent rushing attack will also keep pressure off of Virginia’s defenders in this contest. The Cavaliers lost their 2 top pass rushers. Giving the defense as much rest as possible with a ball control offense would definitely help Virginia to cover the spread versus UCLA.

Virginia Cavaliers Betting Trends

  • Virginia Cavaliers 5-3 As Underdog or PK since last season
  • Virginia Cavaliers 2-0 When Line was 50.5 to 54.5 since last season
  • Virginia Cavaliers 3-8 O-U All Games since last season
  • Virginia Cavaliers 2-3 O-U On Road since last season
  • Virginia Cavaliers 0-4 O-U When Line is 50 to 60 since last season
  • Virginia Cavaliers 0-2 O-U When Line was 50.5 to 54.5 since last season

Why Bet On UCLA (-20) To Beat Virginia

UCLA has a lot of starters returning from a team that went 10 and 3 overall. The Bruins return 9 of 11 starters on offense. Running back Paul Perkins returns. Perkins led the Pac 12 in rushing yards last season. He’ll work behind an offensive line that returns all 5 starters. The Bruins’ O-Line could be one of the best in all of college football. Perkins has an outside shot of winning the Heisman Trophy this season.

But, UCLA’s fortunes rest on freshman QB Josh Rosen’s shoulders. Rosen takes the place of Brett Hundley who is backing up Aaron Rodgers with the Green Bay Packers in the NFL. If the Packers though so highly of Hundley that they’d draft him, nothing else needs to be said about how important Hundley was to UCLA last season.

Rosen has some big shoes to fill. Virginia will be his first game in college football. How will he respond?  Rosen did play in a system similar to what UCLA runs, but going from high school to college is a huge step. Luckily, the freshman QB can lean on Perkins and that awesome offensive line for this matchup.

As far as UCLA’s defense is concerned, there’s no reason for it not to be one of the best, if not these best, unit in the Pac 12. The defense has playmakers at numerous positions. The D should dominate Virginia in this matchup.

UCLA Bruins Betting Trends

  • UCLA Bruins 2-4 At Home since last season
  • UCLA Bruins 4-7 As Favorite since last season
  • UCLA Bruins 0-1 When Line was 50.5 to 54.5 since last season
  • UCLA Bruins 2-3 As Home Favorite since last season
  • UCLA Bruins 5-7-1 O-U All Games since last season
  • UCLA Bruins 1-4-1 O-U At Home since last season
  • UCLA Bruins 3-3 O-U When Line is 50 to 60 since last season
  • UCLA Bruins 1-1 O-U When Line was 50.5 to 54.5 since last season

I am recommending everyone and their dog to bet the UCLA Bruins in college football week 1 action. My final score prediction is UCLA 31, Virginia 7
