Bet on Virginia Tech (-4.5) Because…
VA Tech’s defense is too tough for the Panthers to get to their averages in yards and points per game. Pittsburgh usually averages 418 total yards and 38.4 points per game. But the Hokies’ defense allows 302 total yards and less than 18 points per game.
“It’s not something we’ve addressed,” Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuentes said of the Hokies’ recent struggles vs. the Panthers. “I know that Pitt has been very good and we haven’t, for whatever reason, whether it was there or here, haven’t had much success in recent history. But it’s not something we dwell on.”
Bet on Pittsburgh (+4.5) Because…
The trends point to a Pittsburgh cover in this battle. Pittsburgh is 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 games following a bye week. The home team is also 4-1 ATS in the last 5 games between these 2. When it comes to Virginia Tech trends, Pittsburgh appears to have the upper hand. The Hokies are 1-8 ATS in the last 9 total meetings. They are also 0-6 ATS in the last 6 meetings in Pittsburgh.
Panthers coach Pat Narduzzi acknowledges the Thursday contest is pretty much a “must-win” game.
“Yeah, I would say so,” Narduzzi said. “I would say so. Based on how things look and I think every ACC game is a must win as we go on, as far as what you want to do. You’re a 5-2 football team, and each one of these games is important.”
Expert Pick & Final Score Prediction
Virginia Tech was fantastic when putting a beat down on the Miami Hurricanes in their last. As a -4.5 home favorite VA Tech dominated Miami 37 to 16. Virginia Tech is a talented team.
But facing Pittsburgh, especially on the road, has been the Hokies’ Achilles Heel. The trends are awfully scary. Not only that, but Virginia Tech was terrible when losing 17 to 31 to Syracuse in their last road game. To make matters worse, VA Tech was a -23-point favorite over Syracuse.
Pittsburgh isn’t a bad team. Their last loss was on September 24. The Panthers lost 36 to 37 to North Carolina on that day. Since then, Pittsburgh has beaten Marshall, Georgia Tech and Virginia.
That, along with the fact that the Hokies somehow blow it ATS every time they show up in Pittsburgh, means that I must take the points. To me, Pittsburgh keeps this one close.
