Despite having both, the higher national ranking and playing at home, apparently Las Vegas college football oddsmakers don’t have a whole lot of belief in the unbeaten Miami Hurricanes. After opening as a 2.5-point home underdog and then dropping down to as low as a 1.5-point dog, Miami is back to being a 2.5-point home dog against Virginia Tech for this matchup.
The Canes haven’t blown the opposition away in any of their last four games, Miami does rank 42nd nationally in scoring (32.0 ppg) and a stellar 20th in points allowed (18.7 ppg).
Miami got by North Carolina 24-19 last weekend but failed to cover the spread as a 21-point road favorite. The Hurricanes beat Syracuse 27-19 in Week 8 as a 17.5-point home fave and squeaked past Georgia tech 25-24 in Week 7 as a 6.5-point home favorite. Quarterback Malik Rosier has passed for 2,071 yards with 17 touchdowns and just four interceptions.
Virginia Tech has won three straight since suffering their only loss of the season against Clemson in Week 6. The Hokies smacked Duke around last weekend 24-3 to cash in as a 17-point home favorite after routing North Carolina 59-7 the week before to cover the chalk as a 20.5-point home fave.
Quarterback Josh Jackson is having a fine season with 2,032 passing yards with 17 touchdowns and just four interceptions. The Hokies are putting a healthy 35.4 points per game on the board to rank 29th in scoring while limiting their opponents to just 11.5 points per contest to rank a stupendous second in points allowed.
It looks a bit strange that Miami has the higher national ranking and is playing at home, yet their an underdog, don’t let appearances fool you. Virginia Tech is the better team in this matchup, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.
Miami has gone 6-0 ATS in their last six games in November and 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games following a straight-up win, the Hurricanes are also an uninspiring 2-5 ATS in the last seven games following an ATS loss.
Conversely, the Hokies are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a straight-up win and 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games overall. Virginia Tech’s superior defense will be the difference in this one!
