College Football Week 2 Upset Picks

College Football Week 1 saw plenty of upsets. 3 teams in the Top 10 went down as LSU fell to Wisconsin, Oklahoma succumbed to Houston’s defense, and Notre Dame lost to Texas. I’m not sure Week 2 will see upsets on the moneyline like that. But will there be upsets against the spread? I think so!

College Football Week 2 Upset Picks

Kentucky at #25 Florida
When:  Saturday, Sept. 10 at 3:30 pm ET
Where: Ben Hill Griffiths Stadium, Gainesville, FL
TV: CBS
Odds: Kentucky +17

Analysis: Kentucky travels to the Swamp to battle Florida. In Week 1, Kentucky lost 35 to 44 to Southern Miss as a -3.5-point home favorite. Florida beat UMass 24 to 7 as a -34.5-point favorite.

The problem for Florida in this game is obvious. The Gators don’t appear to have much of an offense. UMass is one of the worst teams in college football. The fact that Florida scored only 24 points against them is a bad sign. Florida might only get 17 points versus Kentucky, meaning that in order to push in this game, they’d have to hold Kentucky to 0 points. I’m not sure that’s going to happen since Kentucky’s strength is offense.

I like the Wildcats at +17.

Week 2 Upset Pick: Kentucky +17

Virginia Tech at #9 Tennessee
When:  Saturday, Sept. 10 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Bristol Motor Speedway, Birstol, TN
TV: ABC
Odds: Virginia Tech +10.5

Analysis: It’s hard to look past how badly Tennessee played in their game versus Appalachian State. To their benefit, Appalachian State is one of the better non-Big 5 Power Conference teams in the nation. But Tennessee still needed overtime in order to beat the Mountaineers 20 to 13.

Virginia Tech beat Liberty 36 to 13 as a -31.5-point favorite in Week 1. What’s interesting is that VA Tech was able to hold Liberty to only 13 points. I think that the Hokies needed a change at the top, meaning that Frank Beamer leaving was exactly the spark the program needed. Virginia Tech has a decent all around team.

They could surprise Tennessee with a win straight up. If they don’t win, I do like the Hokies keeping this game closer than 10.5 points.

Week 2 Upset Pick: Virginia Tech +10.5

Texas Tech at Arizona State
When:  Saturday, Sept. 10 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe, Arizona
TV: FS1
Odds: Texas Tech +4

Analysis: Arizona State throttled Northern Arizona 44 to 13 in Week 1. They easily covered a -27-point spread. Things should get much more difficult for the Sun Devils against a Texas Tech team that manhandled Stephen F. Austin 66 to 17 in Week 1 as a -37.5-point favorite.

Neither team’s defense is going to show up in this game. Unless you have Alabama’s defense it’s impossible to stop Texas Tech from scoring points. The Red Raiders’ system is one of the tops in the nation at scoring often and scoring quickly.

Arizona State has a good offense as well. But their head coach, Todd Graham, comes from the defensive side. Usually, that would be a plus. Graham hasn’t recruited as well on defense as they expected him to when they hired him at ASU.

Tech should win this game out right. But I’ll take the points

Week 2 Upset Pick: Texas Tech +4
