College Football Week 4 Upset Picks
Can Florida take down Tennessee? How will UCLA respond against Stanford at home? Does Baylor have anything to worry about facing a desperate Oklahoma State squad? Keep reading to find out my take!
#19 Florida at #14 Tennessee
When: Saturday, Sept. 24 at 3:30 pm ET
Where: Neyland Stadium, Knoxville, TN
Odds: Florida +9
Analysis: The Florida Gators lost their starting QB, Luke Del Rio, in their game against North Texas in Week 3. Del Rio won’t be back until mid-October. That’s too bad. Del Rio was slowly turning into a reliable signal-caller for Jim McElwain’s offense.
No matter. I still believe that Florida does enough to keep this game within the 9 points. Tennessee has been god awful against the spread so far this season. The Vols are 1 and 2 ATS after almost losing to Appalachian State in Week 1 before giving up 19 points to Ohio in Week 2.
Florida’s defense might be the second best unit, after Alabama’s, in the SEC. It’s definitely in the Top 3. The defense will keep Tennessee’s offense unbalanced enough in order for the Gators to cover the spread.
Pick: Florida +9
#7 Stanford at UCLA
When: Saturday, Sept. 24 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Rose Bowl, Pasadena, CA
Odds: UCLA +2
Analysis: Stanford took it to USC in Week 3. I thought that the Trojans just let their 6 to 52 loss to Alabama get out of control in Week 1. Man, I was wrong. USC is just a bad team.
UCLA isn’t a bad team. The Bruins managed to beat BYU 17 to 14 on the road in Week 3. Sure, the Bruins haven’t covered a spread yet this season, in fact, they are 0-3 ATS. But if UCLA is ever going to be the team that so many envisioned them to be when they hired Jim Mora Jr. as their head coach, this game is the game for that to happen.
Stanford is good, no doubt. The Bruins have the better quarterback in Josh Rosen, though. They also should have close to 100,000 rowdy fans going nuts in the Rose Bowl. This is the Saturday where UCLA becomes a force in the Pac 12.
Pick: UCLA +2
Oklahoma State at #16 Baylor
When: Saturday, Sept. 24 at 7:30 pm ET
Where: McLane Stadium, Waco, TX
Odds: Oklahoma State +9.5
Analysis: Baylor seems much calmer now that Art Briles isn’t their head coach. The Bears just play football. But the defense should have problems in this battle after taking on offensive has-beens Northwestern State, SMU and Rice so far this season. In a shootout, it makes sense to go with the team getting points.
The team getting way too many points are the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Baylor looked great in the second half against Rice. The Bears are undefeated because of that. Against the spread, Baylor is 0-3, though, because the defense yields too many points.
I do think that Baylor wins this game. I just don’t believe that they’ll beat a desperate Oklahoma State squad by 16 points. I’ll take the Cowboys and the points all day.
Pick: Oklahoma State +9.5
