College Football Week 5 Upset Picks

Can Stanford beat Washington in Washington as an underdog? Will Arizona State take it to USC as an over touchdown dog on Saturday, Oct. 1? How will Wisconsin respond as a double-digit underdog to Michigan in Ann Arbor?

#7 Stanford at #10 Washington
When:  Friday, Sept. 30 at 9:00 pm ET
Where: Husky Stadium, Seattle, WA
TV: ESPN
Odds: Stanford +3

Analysis: Stanford and Washington have solidified themselves as the 2 best teams in the Pac-12. Both the Cardinal and the Huskies are undefeated. Since I believe that either one of these teams can win, I have to back Stanford. To me, the 3 points are going to be huge in this battle.

Both teams have terrific defenses. Stanford’s has actually played better than Washington’s this season. The Cardinal haven’t allowed more than 13 points in its 3 games this season. They beat Kansas State, USC and UCLA so far.

Washington has taken down Rutgers, Idaho, Portland State and Arizona. The game versus Arizona is worrisome if you’re a Huskies fan because Washington’s defense allowed the Wildcats to score 28 points.

Stanford at +3 is offering great value in this matchup.

Pick: Stanford +3

Arizona State at USC
When:  Saturday, Oct. 1 at TBD
Where: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles, CA
TV: TBD
Odds: Arizona State +8

Analysis: The USC Trojans played about as well as they could against Utah this past Friday night. It wasn’t enough. In the 4th quarter of that game, USC allowed Utah to score 14 points while they only scored 3 on their end.

It makes no sense why USC is favored by 8 points in this game. The Trojans probably shouldn’t even be favored by 4 points. Maybe, 3 points or less. The problem that USC is going to have in this game is that ASU pounds the ball mercilessly against defenses. They rushed it 50 times against Cal for 164 yards. The per rush average was only 3.3 yards per carry.

It didn’t matter. ASU kept rushing the football. Cal’s defense imploded in the 4th quarter when it allowed the Sun Devils to score 31 points for a 51 to 41 win and cover.
If USC’s defense got tired versus Utah, it will definitely get tired versus ASU.

Pick: Arizona State +8

#8 Wisconsin at #4 Michigan
When:  Saturday, Oct. 1 at 3:30 pm ET
Where: Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, MI
TV: ABC
Odds: Wisconsin +10.5

Analysis: Michigan has one of the best defenses in the nation. The Wolverines allow an average of 13.8 points per game. It allows an average of 269.8 total yards per game.

But where the Wolverines have a slight problem is where Wisconsin excels. Michigan allows opponents to rush for 122.5 yards per game. Wisconsin rushes for 184.2 yards per game on average. Unless Michigan’s D can find a way to stop Wisconsin’s rushing attack, this game should be much, much closer than 10.5 points.

In fact, because Wisconsin only allows an average of 11.8 points per game on defense, the Badgers have a big shot at upsetting Michigan straight up as well as beating them versus the spread.

Pick: Wisconsin +10.5
