Every fantasy football strategy in the world says never reach for a defense. When you do, as I did last season, you get laughed at. There is something comforting about only having to worry about your defense on its by week.
Here is a fantasy football drafting strategy I will be using this year. I have my eye on five defenses. I will draft my defense after any of the five defenses are picked by another owner.
2015 Vegas NFL Defesive Props Vs Defensive Fantasy Rankings
The Legion of Boom, Seattle’s D, is listed as the number one defense on most fantasy rankings lists. Although Seattle’s defense should still be very good, the Seahawks went through some changes on the defensive side during the offseason. Cornerback Byron Maxwell is no longer a Seahawk. Taking Maxwell’s place will be Cary Williams who played for the Philadelphia Eagles last season. This season, fantasy football fans will definitely get a chance to see how good Richard Sherman really is. As far as defensive props are concerned, don’t expect the Seahawks to be a team to back. They’ll be the favorites in most prop betting situations, but they don’t appear to be any better than some other teams on the fantasy rankings list. One thing to note is that safety Kam Chancellor is considering holding out of training camp. Whether he does or not, it’s obvious that he isn’t happy.

Buffalo might be a better play for both prop bets and to draft in fantasy. The Bills recorded 54 sacks last season. The defense also scored 4 touchdowns and produced 19 interceptions. Even though Buffalo traded great young linebacker Kiko Alonso to Philadelphia for running back LeSean McCoy, the Bills defense could actually be better this season than it was last season. Rex Ryan, who built terrific defenses when the head coach of the New York Jets, is now the head coach at Buffalo. Expect the Bills to put up gaudy defensive numbers.
The third ranked fantasy team in the defense category on most lists are the St. Louis Rams. The Rams had an unbelievable 40 sacks in 2014. It’s unbelievable because the Rams recorded only 1 sack in their first 5 games of last season. If the Rams get off to a better start, they could be the team that leads the NFL in both defensive prop betting and in fantasy points. The Rams play in the toughest division in football, the NFC West. That’s the only issue. Both Arizona and Seattle are good enough to win the NFC while the Rams have a good shot of making the playoffs this season.
One team that should definitely improve when it comes to defensive prop betting and in fantasy football are the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins defense recorded 39 sacks and 14 interceptions last season. The Dolphins signed DL Ndamukong Suh away from Detroit. Suh is the type of player that will upgrade an already good Dolphins’ D. Taking a shot on the Fins’ defense in both prop betting and in fantasy makes sense.
