Analyzing My 2016 NFL Preseason Week 1 Picks
New Orleans at New England
When: Thursday, Aug. 11 at 7:30 pm ET
Odds: New England -3.5
Analysis: The Saints believe that they could make it to the playoffs this season. A lot of it depends on their defense. There’s no doubt that New Orleans offense is terrific. That’s why they’re one of the better bets on the card as a 3.5 points underdog against New England this Thursday.
New Orleans’ should score some points against New England’s defense, which doesn’t figure to do much so that Coach Belichick can assess talent. Even if New Orleans plays its second string in the entire game, they could score points. On offense, New England is likely to start Joey Bissett instead of Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo has to fill in for Tom Brady for the first 4 games of the regular season.
Pick: New Orleans +3.5
Detroit at Pittsburgh
When: Friday, Aug. 12 at 7:00 pm ET
Odds: Pittsburgh -3.5
Analysis: The Detroit Lions travel to Steel Town to battle Pittsburgh in their first NFL Preseason game of 2016. Detroit lost arguably one of the Top 5 greatest Lion players of all time when WR Calvin Johnson decided to retire. Detroit’s offense won’t be nearly as dynamic without Megatron there.
But not being dynamic might be a good thing for the Lions. QB Matthew Stafford needs to start relying on his offensive line, running backs, and tight-end more than he has throughout his career. Detroit’s offense might be a more ball controlled unit starting with this preseason game.
As far as the Steelers are concerned, resting WR Antonio Brown, QB Ben Roethlisberger and RB Le’Veon Bell will be the ultimate goal. I just don’t see how Detroit doesn’t at least cover in this game since they’re getting close to 4 points in this matchup.
Pick: Detroit +3.5
Dallas Cowboys at Los Angeles Rams
When: Saturday, Aug. 13 at 8:00 pm ET
Odds: Los Angeles -3.5
Analysis: The Rams are going to be fired up playing in front of L.A. fans for the first time since they moved to St. Louis. Covering 3.5 points seems like a daunting task. Then, you realize that Tony Romo may not play a snap. WR Dez Bryant certainly won’t and RB Ezekiel Elliott has a bad hamstring.
Los Angeles will be motivated. Their fans should go crazy. I think the Rams cover the spread.
Pick: Los Angeles -3.5
