NFL Week 1 Upset Picks

2016 NFL Week 1 Upset Picks

The 2016 NFL Regular Season starts on Thursday, Sept. 8 when Carolina battles Denver in a repeat of Super Bowl 50!  And that is my first upset pick for week 1 of NFL betting action. Keep reading to find out what my other NFL week 1 upsets picks are. Happy hunting!

Will Carolina find revenge or will Denver make it two in a row versus Cam and the Panthers? New England, without Terrific Tom, head to the Valley of the Sun to battle Arizona. Can New England beat one of the top teams in the NFC without the best player in franchise history? Pittsburgh heads to D.C. looking to pummel Washington. Is Washington for real?  Or, will Pitt expose the DC’ers as frauds?

How To Pick NFL Week 1 Upsets

What: Carolina Panthers (0-0) at Denver Broncos (0-0)
When: Thursday, September 8, 2016
Start Time: 8:30 PM ET
Where: Denver, CO
Stadium: Sports Authority Field at Mile High
Spread: Panthers -3
Moneyline: Carolina -175 at Denver +155
Game Total: 42
Watch: NBC
Stream: NBC Sports Live
Listen: Carolina vs Denver

Analysis: Sure, Carolina takes on Denver with the Broncos wondering who their starting QB will be…but so what?  Denver’s defense is still good enough to wreak havoc on Carolina’s offense. Not only that, but Cam Newton hasn’t looked exactly sharp during the NFL Preseason.

One player who might get off to a strong start early in the season is RB C.J. Anderson. Lest we forget, Anderson, like everyone on the Broncos’ team last season, had to adjust to new coach Gary Kubiak. If Anderson starts hot, he could exploit a Carolina defense that has gone through a few changes itself.

Denver should win this game straight up.

NFL Week 1 Upset Pick: Denver

What: New England Patriots (0-0) at Arizona Cardinals (0-0)
When: Sunday, September 11, 2016
Start Time: 8:30 PM ET
Where: Glendale, AZ
Stadium: U of Phoenix Stadium
Spread: Cardinals -5.5
Moneyline: New England +200 at Arizona -240
Game Total: 47.5
Watch: NBC
Stream: NBC Sports Live
Listen: New England vs Arizona

Analysis: The Patriots start the 4-game Jimmy Garoppolo era on Sunday, Sept. 11, by taking on the well-coached Arizona Cardinals. Arizona has the players to beat New England straight up in this game. This is especially true in regards to Arizona’s offense. Watch as David Johnson cuts right and then left before stepping into the end zone!  Marvel at the outstretched arms of Michael Floyd as he grabs a pass out of the air!

Too much?  I think so. Arizona is good. But are they 5.5 points better than New England without Tom Brady?  I don’t think so. The Patriots game plan better than any other team in the NFL. They’ll find a way to keep this battle under the number.

NFL Week 1 Upset Pick: New England

What: Pittsburgh Steelers (0-0) at Washington (0-0)
When: Monday, September 12, 2016
Start Time: 7:10 PM ET
Where: Landover, MD
Stadium: FedEx Field
Spread: Steelers -3
Moneyline: Pittsburgh -175 at Washington +155
Game Total: 50
Watch: ESPN
Stream: Watch ESPN
Listen: Pittsburgh vs Washington

Analysis: I really don’t understand the odds in this game. Pittsburgh is a good team. They aren’t a great team because although the offense should score points, the defense has trouble stopping anybody. Washington QB Kirk Cousins and WR DeSean Jackson played well in spots during the preseason. My guess is that Washington is going to find a way to exploit Pittsburgh’s young defense while Washington’s offense should be improved enough to at least slow the Steelers’ down some.

Even if you don’t bet on this game, try and catch it. We’ll find out how good Washington corner Josh Norman is for sure when he goes up against the best wide receiver in the NFL, Antonio Brown.

NFL Week 1 Upset Pick: Washington
