Why Bet On San Francisco to Beat Arizona (-6.5)

The Harbaugh-less 49ers look competitve again.

Although San Francisco is 1 and 1 on the season and gave up 43 points to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2, the 49’ers just aren’t as bad as everybody thought that they’d be. At one point during the Steelers’ game, San Francisco was within a single score of Pittsburgh. The Steelers opened it up later in the game.

The reason for San Francisco’s resurgence is that they play defense relatively well. Most teams in the NFL are capable of giving up over 40 points to Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers offense. San Francisco also has a resurgent quarterback in Colin Kaepernick. Kap only passed for 165 yards versus Minnesota in Week 1. Who cares?  SF won 20 to 3 as a +3 point home dog. In Week 2, Kap went nuts. He threw for 335 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Almost as important is the fact that Kaepernick hasn’t thrown a pick and that he’s rushed for 92 yards. He’s making all of the right decisions so far this season. The Cardinals’ pass defense is ranked twenty-eight in the NFL. Kaepernick can expose the AZ D on Sunday.

Why Bet On Arizona (-6.5) to Beat San Francisco

The Caridnal are the most under-rated team in the NFL.

After RB Andre Ellington went down with an injury in Week 1, many football analysts assumed that the Cardinals’ rushing attack would take a hit. But this is a Bruce Arians coached team. Arians has one of the top football minds in the NFL.  All he did was utilize veteran Chris Johnson and turn loose rookie David Johnson.

Chris Johnson did okay with his touches. He rushed 20 times for 72 yards for a 3.6 per carry average. 3.6 isn’t great, but it’s not bad and it helped the Cardinals control the tempo versus Chicago in Week 2. David Johnson rushed for 42 yards on 5 carries. His average was 8.4 yards a carry. He scored a touchdown. He also ran back a kick-off for a touchdown. David Johnson figures to get more touches in this game.

When Arizona isn’t beating you with the running game, they’re beating you with the passing attack. Carson Palmer has thrown for 492 yards, 7 touchdowns and only a single interception. His QB rating is 124.4.

Arizona’s offense is just too good for the Cardinals not to win this game straight up. But Kaepernick at San Francisco has the tools and the weapons to keep up. This should be a close game. My free pick is bet the 49ers to cover the 6.5-point spread against the Cardinals. My final score prediction is Arizona 24, San Francisco 20.
