The Bengals has lost two of three and are completely desperate to keep their playoff hopes alive after getting smacked around by Jacksonville 23-7 last week to fall to 3-5 this season on the season. Now as they sit in third place in the AFC North behind both, Pittsburgh and Baltimore, the Bengals need to get their act together in a big way. Despite ranking a solid 11th in points allowed (19.8 ppg), Cincinnati has really struggled offensively this season in averaging just 16.8 points per contest (28th) – all after adding speedy wide receiver John Ross with the ninth overall pick and clearly gifted running back Joe Mixon in the second round.
While Mixon has contributed fairly well for a rookie and has played in every game, Ross has gone from being the ninth overall pick to a healthy scratch last week against Jacksonville in what has been a clearly disappointing rookie season. Ross has played only 11 offensive snaps this season.
The Titans have won three straight, even if their last two wins have been ‘ugly’ three-point victories over the pitiful Browns and uninspiring Ravens. Tennessee got past Baltimore 23-20 last week as franchise quarterback Marcus Mariota passed for 218 yards with two touchdowns and an interception while second-year running back Derrick Henry added a rushing score in the win. Free safety Kevin Byard picked off Baltimore’s Joe Flacco twice in the win and Tennessee recorded three sacks to get the ‘W’.
While I had some high hopes for the Bengals coming into the season and believed their draft day additions would really help them improve their sagging offense from a year ago, right now, I’m absolutely certain Cincinnati is just playing out the string in what will almost assuredly be Marvin Lewis’ last season as the head coach of the Bengals.
Tennessee isn’t blowing people off the field, but they are finding ways to win games, even if it has been a little ugly. Cincinnati is just 3-9-1 ATS in their last 13 games against a team with a winning record and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games against their AFC counterparts. While Tennessee has gone just 1-3-1 ATS in their last five games and 1-4 ATS in their last five meetings against the Bengals, they have the better offense in this contest, the better quarterback and apparently, the better head coach in Mike Mularkey. The Titans win and narrowly cover the chalk in another ugly one!
Pick: Tennessee -4.5
