Should You Bet On The Detroit Lions In The 2014 NFL Season?

For the past five seasons, the Detroit Lions (7-9 SU, 6-10 ATS, 8-8 O/U) have been known for their vast talent level – and consistently boneheaded and immature antics under former head coach Jim Schwartz.

Now, the Lions are heading in a new direction (again) under far more cerebral, no-nonsense head coach Jim Caldwell and they’re expecting their results to improve under the former Indianapolis Colts’ head coach.

This expert analysis on the Lions’ upcoming 2015 campaign will give you the knowledge you’ll need in order to make a series of successful wagers on the Lions this coming season.

Betting On the Detroit Lions to Win the 2014 Super Bowl

Analysis: I guess it’s possible the Lions could really get their act together and play outstanding football for Caldwell much like they did in going 10-6 during the 2011 season, but this talent-laden team opens up its 2014 campaign with a trio of tough matchups I’m not sure they can or will win.

Not only that, but no matter how much they improve this season, I have a tough time believing they can leapfrog elite NFC title contenders like San Francisco, New Orleans, NFC North division rival Green Bay or the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks for that matter.

Still, this team could surprise a bunch and at a robust +3300, I think they’re at least worth a wager.

The Lions did go 6-6 SU against the NFC conference foes last season and they did finish third in passing a and sixth against the run last season.

If the Lions can shore up their mediocre rushing attack and improve a pass defense that ranked a dismal 23rd last season, again, this talent-laden team with stars like Reggie Bush, Matthew Stafford and Ndamukong Suh could be full of surprises.

Betting On the Detroit Lions to Win the NFC North

2014 NFL Odds to Win the NFC North Division

  • Green Bay Packers -150
  • Chicago Bears +250
  • Detroit Lions +375
  • Minnesota Vikings +3000

Analysis: If I just wrote that there’s a slim possibility that the Lions could upset the entire apple cart en route to a shocking Super Bowl 49 appearance, then I guess it’s also possible they could win the NFC North, even if I don’t have them as my favorite to do so.

Detroit went 4-2 SU and ATS against its division rivals last season and I can see them doing likewise again in 2014 under the more player-friendly, but demanding Caldwell who will hold each player responsible for their performances.

If the Lions get some early-season confidence, they could end up surprising Green Bay to win the division, although I believe Chicago is also going to be in the mix. In the end, I say place this wager on a Detroit Lions team that could actually come out on top.

Betting On the Detroit Lions to Win In Week One

  • NY Giants at Detroit -4
  • Over/Under 45.5

I’m going to get right to the point with this Week 1 pick by saying that I really like the Over for this contest. The Lions went 5-3 O/U at home last season and narrowly missed going 7-1. The Giants went 3-5 O/U in their eight road games last season, while narrowly playing Under the O/U Total in their Dec. 22 meeting against the Lions.

With two elite quarterbacks taking the field in this matchup and a pair of defenses that will probably be a bit behind in the early going, I like the Over.

My Pick: The Lions and the Over 45.5 points

Detroit Lions Betting Tips

The Lions are just 4-6 SU and ATS in their last 10 home games so keep an eye on the Lions’ odds when they play at home this season.

When the Lions score at least 23 points, they’re apparently very tough to beat, having gone 5-1 SU in games in which they reached that figure offensively.

In the end, I like Detroit ‘s hiring of Jim Caldwell and believe he will have a positive effect on the team’s dysfunctional players. However, I expect it be at least another year before this team really contends.
