Preseason Week 3 Betting Odds Battle of Pennsylvania - Pittsburgh vs. Philadelphia

How Big Of A Risk Is It To Bet On The Philadelphia Eagles In 2014?

The Philadelphia Eagles (10-6 SU, 8-8 ATS, 9-7 O/U) had a fine season in 2013 under first-year head coach Chip Kelly as they won 10 games and took the NFC East division title for the first time in since 2010.

Now Philadelphia and Kelly are both looking to take another step forward and evolve into a perennial title-contending powerhouse, much like the program Kelly built at the University of Oregon.

Let’s take a look at how Philadelphia will likely fare during the upcoming 2014 NFL regular season.

Betting On The Philadelphia Eagles To Win the 2015 Super Bowl

A lot of people laughed when the Eagles hired Chip Kelly out of Oregon instead of going with a more established or up-and-coming young NFL veteran. Naysayers far and wide said Kelly’s ultra-fast, high-scoring offense would never fly in the NFL, but they were laughably wrong as Philadelphia fielded the second-best offense in the league last season.

Philadelphia ranked ninth in passing (256.9 ypg) as young quarterback Nick Foles blossomed into one of the best young signal-callers in the league and the Birds also finished first in rushing (160.4 ypg) as multifaceted running back LeSean McCoy rushed for an NFL-best 1,607 yards .

Now the Eagles look like they’re going to be even more potent on offense despite parting ways with polarizing wide receiver DeSean Jackson. The Eagles added elusive veteran playmaker Darren Sproles and will also have underrated wide receiver Jeremy Maclin back in the fold after missing last season with an ACL tear.

Philadelphia also drafted a pair of receivers in the second and third rounds and addressed some of their defensive needs by nabbing defensive end Marcus Smith with the 26th pick in the draft.

Now as far as their odds of winning Super Bowl 49, I think the Birds warrant some consideration at the very least as I am projecting them to win the NFC East again this coming and reach the postseason as one of six teams with a shot to win it all.

At a whopping +2500, the Eagles are a great value to bet on for Super Bowl 49.

Betting On The Philadelphia Eagles To Win the NFC East

  • Philadelphia Eagles +130
  • New York Giants +300
  • Dallas Cowboys +350
  • Washington Redskins +400

Analysis: If you want to bet on the Birds to win the NFC East, then go right on because that’s exactly what’s going to happen this coming season.

As of now, Philadelphia stands alone as the best team in an NFC East that isn’t nearly as strong as it used to be years ago. The Dallas Cowboys are well on their way to making history after going 8-8 for three straight seasons. The New York Giants could get their act together after their disappointing 7-9 campaign but right now, I definitely wouldn’t say the G-Men are going to be better than Philly.

Last but not least, I guess it’s possible that the Washington Redskins could turn things around and make a run for a division title much like they did in 2012, but they’ve got a first-year head coach and a lot of holes to fill.

The Eagles went 4-2 SU against their NFC East counterparts last season and I think they’ll duplicate that feat this coming season.

Betting On The Philadelphia Eagles To Win In Week One

  • Jacksonville at Philadelphia -11.5
  • Over/Under 51.5

The Eagles have gone 5-4-1 SU and 3-7 ATS in its last 11 games as a favorite of at least eight points or more and have failed to cover the spread in five straight such matchups.

The Birds are 3-1 SU and 2-2 ATS in their last four games against AFC South opponents, with all four contests coming during the 2010 season.

Philadelphia last hosted Jacksonville way back in 2006 when they lost 13-6 as a 8-point favorite but beat the Jags during their 2010 encounter 28-3 to cash in as a 3-point road favorite.

Jacksonville is back in ‘rebuilding mode’ once again this season under second-year head coach Gus Bradley, but they’ve got a long road ahead just to get back to respectability. The Jags finished 31st in rushing and 29th against the run defensively, so they’ve got a plethora of issues they’re trying to address.

My Pick: Philly wins this one and covers the spread 31-17.

Philadelphia Eagles Betting Tips

The Eagles are 4-6 SU and 3-6-1 ATS in their L/10 home games and 1-3 ATS in their last four games as a favorite and they’ve also gone 4- 1 in Under outcomes in their L/5 games when their O/U Total is at least 54 points.

I like the Birds to get into high-scoring affairs against Indianapolis, Washington, New York, Green Bay and Dallas while playing in far more competitive matchups against San Francisco, Arizona, Carolina and Seattle.

I also think Philly will rout St. Louis, Houston and Dallas during the 2014 NFL regular season.

In the end, I’m projecting the Philadelphia Eagles to win at least 10 games in 2014 and make it one step further than they did in reaching the Wild Card round last postseason.
