Can The Raidiers Rule The NFL In California in 2014?

Should You Bet On Oakland Raiders In The 2014 NFL Season?

The Oakland Raiders (4-12 SU, 7-8-1 ATS, 7-8-1 O/U) will enter the 2014 regular season looking to avoid the pathetic play that they have consistently displayed in recording consecutive four-win campaigns under embattled head coach Bruce Allen in each of the last two seasons.

Unfortunately, I’m not sure that Oakland can address all of their many needs in just one offseason and expect this beleaguered franchise to fail to top the .500 plateau for the 12th straight season.

Let’s explore what the Raiders are facing as they get set for the start of the 2014 NFL regular season.

Betting On the Oakland Raiders to Win the 2014 Super Bowl

  • NFL Odds to win Super Bowl 49
  • Oakland Raiders +10000

Analysis: Let me just say that it’s a damn shame to see a once proud raiders franchise fall into the state of ineptitude that they’ve been in for the better part of the last two decades.

Oakland has not won more than eight games since reaching the Super Bowl back in 2002. The very following season, Oakland became a four-win team and they’ve been just about that ever since, save two 8-8 seasons in 2010 and 2011.

Having said that, there’s an old saying about a fool and his money being easily parted – and it applies here in a big way.

Unless you love throwing money away, there is absolutely no way you should make a wager on Oakland to cash in on their season-long NFL Super Bowl Futures Odds.

My Pick: Save Your Money…The Raiders are a Horrible Futures Odds Bet!

Betting On the Oakland Raiders to Win the AFC West

  • Denver Broncos -350
  • Kansas City Chiefs +600
  • San Diego Chargers +600
  • Oakland Raiders +3000

Analysis: With the Raiders finishing either third or fourth in every season since 2003 – and showing no improvement at all despite routinely changing coaches in recent years there’s no way I can advise anyone to bet on Oakland to cash in against their stunning AFC West division odds.

No way does Oakland even challenge for a division title, not unless Ken Stabler, Cliff Branch, Art Shell and Fred Biletnikoff suddenly find the fountain of youth and transform back into 20-something-year-olds.

There’s Peyton Manning in Denver, Philip Rivers in San Diego and Alex Smith in Kansas City . While I like the addition of veteran signal-caller Matt Schaub, it’s easy to see that the Raiders have far more questions than answers at this point. Still, Schaub is Oakland ‘s first ‘real’ starting quarterback in years and his arrival has many in the Bay area excited.

When asked about his confidence following last season’s painful campaign with Houston , Schaub had this to say.

“Yeah…because you can’t make it anywhere in this game without having confidence through the roof,” Schaub told reporters following last Wednesday’s practice. “You’re going to go through ups and downs as a player. It’s [about] how you bounce back from it … how you move forward.”

“You’ve got to put everything behind you, whether it’s good or bad. It’s about the next thing in front. I’m just excited about this training camp and to get going with the regular season here shortly.”

Confidence or not, Oakland went 1-5 SU and 2-4 ATS against their division rivals last season and are just 3-7 SU and 5-5 ATS in their last 10 games against AFC West opponents. Save your money here…the Raiders clearly aren’t ready to challenge for a division crown.

Projected Order of Finish: Denver , San Diego , Kansas City, Oakland

Betting On the Oakland Raiders to Win In Week One

  • Oakland Raiders at NY Jets -5
  • Over/Under 39.5

The New York Jets have been a consistently dysfunctional team under head coach Rex Ryan, but they’re also the better team in this affair, although, not by as much as you might think.

Having said that…I do like the Jets to get the home win and accompanying ATS cover, mostly because they’re going to be very fired up – and facing a Raiders team that doesn’t look much better on paper than it did a year ago.

Oakland drafted athletically-gifted linebacker Khalil Mack with the fifth overall pick in the draft and grabbed quarterback Derek Carr with the 36th overall pick. The Raiders also added veteran running back Maurice Jones-Drew, cornerback Carlos Rodgers, defensive end Justin Tuck and linebacker LaMarr Woodley in free agency.

Oakland has lost three straight and a consistent six of their last eight games SU and ATS as an underdog of six points or less, including their 37-27 road loss to the Jets as a 3-point puppy in December of last season.

In addition to a pick for the Jets to cover the ATS betting line, I also believe the best wager for this Week 1 matchup is to play the Over 39.5 points.

These two AFC rivals have both played Over their set O/U Totals in three straight meetings and I expect them to both reach the 21-point plateau in this 2014 regular season opener.

My Pick: Jets -5 Points/Over 39.5 Total Points

Oakland Raiders Betting Tips

The Raiders finished off their 2013 home campaign by losing each of their final four games while failing to cover the spread in all four games to fall to 4-6 SU and ATS over their L/10 home games.

Things aren’t any better even when the Raiders are home favorites with the floundering franchise going 3-7 ATS in its L/10 home games as a fave.

The Raiders play the NFC West this coming season and they’re just 4-6 SU and ATS in their last 10 games against their NFC West counterparts.

Still, many of Oakland ‘s players say that they are going to be much better off this coming season because of Schaub’s arrival.

Raiders defensive tackle Antonio Smith, who played with Schaub in Houston the last five seasons said, "We had turned around a new era there, and (fans) got used to winning, and they forgot who helped them win and turned on him.”

"But at the end of the day, everything happens for a reason,” Smith added. “God got his hand on Matt, and he’s right here where he’s supposed to be."

Even more trouble could be looming for the Raiders when they play their four AFC East counterparts this season with Oakland posting a pitiful 1-9 SU mark and slightly better 3-7 ATS mark in their L/10 games against AFC East teams.

I’m expecting Oakland to take it on the chin in a big way against New England , San Diego , Arizona , Seattle , Denver (twice), and San Francisco while getting the better of Houston , Cleveland , K.C. and Buffalo.
