Is San Diego A Smart Bet To Cover the 2.5-point Spread vs the 49ers?

Stats are a funny thing. Sometimes, football fans have to dig into stats in order to realize how well a team will actually do in any given category. For example, it looks like the Chargers averaged 4.7 yards per carry versus Seattle in their 15 to 16 loss to the Seahawks in Week 3. In reality, San Diego got 82 out of 156 yards on only 3 plays. That’s more than 50% of their rushing yards on 3 out of 33 carries.

A better vision of how well San Diego has been rushing the ball can be seen in the Chargers 22 to 19 win over Arizona in Week 2. The Chargers rushed for 46 yards from 23 carries. That’s a 2 yard average per carry performance. If the Chargers rush at 2 yards per carry versus San Francisco, they have no chance of covering the spread.

It’s doubtful that San Diego will play QB Phillip Rivers or WR Keenan Allen. Melvin Gordon, who averaged 2.4 yards per carry versus Seattle, is likely to sit as well. What it means is that Branden Oliver is going to have to carry the team on his back. Without a good rushing attack, San Diego won’t cover the spread.

Is San Francisco A Smart Bet To Cover the 2.5-point Spread vs the Bolts?

A lot of talk during the NFL Pre-season has revolved around how badly San Francisco’s defense was going to be because they lost so many starters during the off-season. So far, that has turned out to be correct.

Even though Houston was playing without RB Arian Foster in Week 1, the 49’ers allowed the Texans to rush for 146 yards. The Niners allowed Houston QBs to throw for 254 yards when completing 20 out of 29 passes. None of Houston’s quarterbacks will be confused with Warren Moon.

Houston beat San Francisco 23 to 10. In the second pre-season game, Dallas only rushed for 102 yards. But the Cowboys averaged 4.6 yards per rush and Tony Romo threw only 1 pass. In the third pre-season game, San Francisco’s D actually played well when holding Denver to less than 4 yards per carry on the ground and less than 6 yards per pass play.

If San Francisco’s defense steps it up versus San Diego, the 49’ers should cover the spread. If the defense doesn’t step it up and plays like it did versus Houston and Dallas, the 49’ers could get blown out in this matchup.

I pick the Chargers to bet on to beat the 49ers. My final score prediction is San Diego 23, San Francisco 16.
