Bet The Cleveland Browns at +4 Because…
Cleveland (3-13 SU, 5-10-1 ATS) won a paltry three games last season but are headed in a new direction under the guidance of veteran NFL lifer Hue Jackson and polarizing quarterback Robert Griffin III. Now can the Browns begin their 2016 campaign with a win as 4-point underdogs on the week 1 spread?
The aptly-named RG3 is looking to bounce back in a big way after getting the short end of the stick in Washington. Unfortunately, the Browns didn’t look very impressive in posting a winless 0-4 mark during the preseason while giving up more than twice the points they scored.
Still, Cleveland has plenty of talent starting with running backs Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson and speedy rookie wide receiver Corey Coleman. The Browns ranked a dismal 30th in scoring a year ago (17.4 ppg) so they’ll need their young players to grow up in a hurry.
Defensively, Jackson is looking to improve a unit that ranked 29th in points allowed in 2015 (27.0 ppg). The Browns made some wise moves in the offseason by drafting defensive ends Emmanuel Ogbah and Carl Nassib in the second and third rounds respectively t pair with young defensive tackle Danny Shelton.
The Browns still need to upgrade their linebacker and secondary units, but make no mistake about it…Cleveland can’t get any worse defensively than they were last season.
Bet The Philadelphia Eagles at -4 Because…
The Eagles are also headed in a new direction under first-year head coach Doug Pederson and rookie quarterback Carson Wentz. Philly just traded scheduled starter Sam Bradford to the Minnesota Vikings, so Wentz, if he’s healthy enough, will start for the Birds to kick off the 2016 campaign. Should you bet the Eagles against the NFL week 1 spread?
"This is what I believe in," Pederson said. "This is what this organization believes in. … I’m very comfortable with our football team and Carson being our starter."
Philadelphia finished the 2015 season ranked a solid 12th in scoring, but that was under offensive-minded former head coach Chip Kelly. Veteran running backs Ryan Mathews and Darren Sproles make up one of the most underrated backfields in the league while Wentz will throw the ball to wide receivers Jordan Mathews and Nelson Agholor.
Defensively the Eagles return to a 4-3 under former Lions head coach and new coordinator Jim Schwartz. Defensive end Fletcher Cox is Philadelphia’s best defensive player, though he does have some assistance in the form of veteran linebacker Connor Barwin.
Philadelphia ranked dismal 28th in points allowed (26.9 ppg) and simply doesn’t look very solid in the secondary (again) or at linebacker, outside of Barwin.
NFL Week 1 Browns Vs Eagles ATS Pick
Maybe it’s me, but I just don’t think very highly of Philadelphia right now – or their often head-scratching player transactions.
The Eagles are just 1-4 ATS in their last five home games and 1-4 ATS in their last five games in the month of September.
I know Cleveland has gone 1-4 ATS in their last five road games and 2-8 in their last 10 games, but I’m expecting Hue Jackson to lead his Cleveland Browns team to the outright road win and accompanying ATS cover.
Both of these teams look quite evenly matched, but right now, I’m giving the edge at quarterback to Cleveland’s RG3. Cleveland wins outright and covers the 4-point NFL week 1 spread.
