Tebow time? All signs point to yes!
The 3.5-point favorite Philadelphia Eagles are hosting the Indianapolis Colts in the last game of NFL preseason week 1 betting. The game kicks off at 1:00 PM ET at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia and all eyes will be on polarizing QB Tim Tebow who is currently fourth on the Eagles depth chart.
For the Colts, don’t expect QB Andrew Luck or any of the other veterans to play more than a series or two, if they play at all. Luck will need a few game speed reps with new additions RB Frank Gore and WR Andre Johnson. But that can wait until preseason week 3. The most intriguing battle in training camp so far has been between Donte Moncrief, Phillip Dorsett and Duron Carter (son of Viking great Cris Carter) for the No. 3 receiver spot behind T.Y. Hilton and Johnson.
The new look Eagles will also make their on-field debut. New Eagle QB Sam Bradford will have to wait another six days before taking to the field. Head coach Chip Kelly overhauled his squad during the offseason. He exiled stud RB LeSean McCoy to the Bills in exchange for talented linebacker Kiko Alonso, who will anchor the D. To replace McCoy, Kelly brought in last year’s rushing leader DeMarco Murray.

Colts QB Andrew Luck (4761 yards, 40 TDs & 16 INTs) is primed for a record setting season. He won’t get much work this week. The lion’s share of the reps will go to rookie QB Bryan Bennett and the veteran Matt Hasselbeck.

The Colts rushing game has been a dud since the years of Edgerrin James. The Trent Richardson experiment is over. The Indy brain-trust brought in aging RB Frank Gore (255 att, 1106 yards & 4 TDs) to stabilize the backfield. He will be backed up by Daniel ‘Boom’ Herron, and injury-prone Vick Ballard.
Last year’s breakout WR T.Y. Hilton (82 rec, 1345 yards & 7 TDs) just signed a huge contract. Hilton will be the top focus for opposing offenses and to take the heat off of him, Indy signed Andre Johnson (85 rec , 936 yards & 3 TDs). Even at Johnson’s age he is a huge asset and this wil be his first year playing with an elite QB. Don’t forget about TE Dwayne Allen and the aforementioned battle for the third WR spot. How excited is Luck?
The Colts been decimated by injury during training camp.
- cornerbacks Vontae Davis (groin) and Darius Butler (groin)
- WR Duron Carter (groin)
- offensive tackle Denzelle Good (shoulder)
- running backs Josh Robinson (hamstring) and Vick Ballard (hamstring)
- linebackers Junior Sylvestre (hamstring) and linebacker Nate Irving (knee)
- tight end Justin Sinz (hamstring).
"Very hard, very difficult," Colts coach Chuck Pagano said. "You go through and you have to adapt. You have to make adjustments as far as your practice plan goes. You’re not going to be able to get the same amount of snaps that you want to get. So you modify.
For the Eagles its QB Sam Bradford who has been tapped to be the top gun under center. But he hasn’t played in a significant game since 2013. Most analysts are questioning the call. Mark Sanchez (2418 yards, 14 TDs & 11 INTs) is scheduled to start this game. Matt Barkley and Tim Tebow will back him up.

The biggest WTF moment for the Eagles was the trade of fan favorite LeSean McCoy. Then Kelly brought in DeMarco Murray (392 att , 1845 yards, 13 TDs) and Ryan Matthews (74 att, 330 yards & 3 TDs) to shore up the backfield. Why would Kelly bring in two oft injured backs to replace a sure thing? Granted Murray was the rushing leader last season, but before that he had struggled to play a full season. Everyone knows Matthews struggles with the Chargers.
"It’s year two for him, so I think he feels really comfortable in terms of what our running backs are doing," coach Chip Kelly told Philly.com. "So we are just kind of cross-training him like we do some other guys in terms of how do we get our best players on the field and put them in different situations."
Kelly also over-hauled his receiving corps. Stud wide-outs DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin were unceremoniously dumped. Who will replace them? WRs Jordan Matthews (67 rec, 872 yards, 8 TDs), Riley Cooper and highly-touted rookie Nelson Agholor.
Philadelphia’s defense was 28th last season, 31st against the pass and 15th at stopping the run. The addition of linebacker Kiko Alonso from the Bills will help the cause, but will it be enough?
